SHERMAN, Texas - Head Coach Tim Scannell led the
third-ranked Trinity baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at
Austin College on Saturday, earning his 500th career victory.
Coach Scannell is in his 16th season at the Trinity helm, and holds
an overall record of 500-199 in his career. He is ranked in
the top-10 of active NCAA Division III coaches by winning
percentage (.715), and holds the Tiger records for most wins and
highest winning percentage in program history.
The defending Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Champions won their 11th straight game, and upped their record to 15-1 (3-0 SCAC). Trinity won the opening game of the series 9-1 on Saturday, then took today's doubleheader by final scores of 3-2 and 9-3. Austin College dropped to 2-12 (0-3 SCAC) after the weekend series.
The top half of Sunday’s doubleheader was scheduled for seven innings, but was extended to nine after the teams were locked in a 2-2 tie. Austin Singer broke the deadlock in the top of the ninth with his game-winning single up the middle, scoring Pat Hirschberg.
Austin College got on the board with an unearned run in the first inning, but the Tigers took the lead with a two-run third. The ‘Roos tied up the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth, and neither team scored again until the final frame.
Singer and Hirschberg both hit 2-4 in the opening game, and both Tiger players scored a run. The go-ahead hit by Singer was his only RBI of the game.
Zack Speer hurled 6.2 innings as the Trinity starter, picking up seven strikeouts along the way. Speer was relieved by Teddy Turner in the seventh, who was credited with the victory. Turner (2-0) did not allow a hit or walk in 2.1 innings, and fanned three batters during his time on the mound.
Game two started quickly for the Tigers, highlighted by Drew Butler's second home run of the season to finish off a two-run first inning. Trinity added two more runs in the second, then posted a four-run third to take an 8-1 lead in the game. Jeremy Wolf's two-run double was the key hit in the third for the Tigers.
Second baseman Connor Moore went 3-4 with two runs scored, stealing two bases. Singer added two more hits and two more RBI to his day's total, while Christian Muscarello was 2-4 with two RBI at the plate.
Kyle Bogese (4-0) pitched five innings and struck out seven batters to remain unbeaten, improving his season total to 34 strikeouts in 28.1 innings. Nick Griffith and Matt Tindall combined for four strikeouts to finish out the game.
Trinity opens a seven-game homestand this weekend, starting with a three-game SCAC series with Southwestern University. The two teams will play a single game at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by Saturday's 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
