2013 SCAC Women's Soccer Tournament - Preview

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Trinity University goes for its fifth straight SCAC Championship, but the competition is looking to end those dreams, as six SCAC institutions will compete at this weekend's SCAC Women's Soccer Championship. Official Tournament Website | Bracket

The 2013 event will be held Friday-Sunday, November 8-10 on the campus of Texas Lutheran University, their first time hosting a SCAC event.

Trinity enters as the No. 1 seed as they domianted all season long to move their SCAC conference unbeaten streak to 48 straight games.

The second-ranked Tigers (12-0-0 SCAC / 19-0-1 overall) are led by a prolific offense that has scored 102 goals on the season. Junior All-American Emily Jorgens has posted a team-best 56 points during this campaign. Jorgens, the 2012 SCAC Offensive Player of the Year, leads the Tigers in goals (17, with seven game-winners) and assists (22). She is the Tigers all-time single-season assists leader, and is just one point away from tying the record of 57 points (set by Tara Dillon in 1991). Kelsey Falcone, a junior , has chalked up 38 points, with 14 goals (two game-winners) and 10 assists. Senior Michelle Lanier has accrued 34 points, with 11 goals (two game-winners) and 12 assists. Senior Shelby Guenthardt has 33 points, with 14 goals (three game-winners) and five assists. Guenthardt, who has produced 49 career goals, is in fourth place on Trinity's all-time scoring list, and needs two goals to move into a tie for third. Junior goalkeeper Devan Osegueda has allowed only four goals this season, for a 0.36 goals-against average. Senior defender Jennifer White leads a stingy defense which has yielded six goals over 20 games, for 0.30 per matchup, and has recorded 14 shutouts. White has contributed to the offensive side of the game with two goals and seven assists (11 points).

Southwestern University comes in as the No. 2 seed as they really turned things up durng the conference season. The Pirates (9-3-0 SCAC / 10-8-0) are led by junior Lindsay Jakszta who has had an outstanding season for Southwestern, scoring 11 goals and adding seven assists for a team leading 29 points. Right behind her is freshman Sarah Bevins, who has also been outstanding with 19 total points including seven goals and five assists. Juniors Cailey McClain and Hannah Neil as well as freshman Hayley Miesse all are third on the team in goals with two each. Junior Allie Dillon adds four assits whule Miesse adds three. Freshman Mariah Escajeda has also had a brilliant rookie year in goal, picking up 63 saves on the year and four shutouts.

The Bulldogs of Texas Lutheran University will defend their home turf as they will be the No. 3 seed. The Bulldogs (6-5-1 SCAC / 9-8-1) will compete in their first ever SCAC Tournament Game after making the move from the ASC in 2013. The Bulldogs are led by one of the top goal scorers in the SCAC in sophomore Sioned Kirkpatrick, who has accumilated 17 goals to go with five assists for 39 total points. Freshman Maegan Idrogo adds eight goals into the mix and two assists. Senior Courtney Brooks and freshman Claudia Trevino each have five assists on the year. Sophomore Erin Rose finished fourth in the SCAC in saves with 87 and added four shutouts on the season.

Austin College checks in as the No. 4 seed for the upcoming SCAC Tournament. Head Coach Kristina Corona is in her first year in Sherman, but was in the SCAC Championship a year ago with the University of Dallas, leading the Crusaders to the Championship Game. The 'Roos (5-6-1 SCAC / 6-12-1) are led by senior Lauren Scoot with eight goals and two assists. Junior Mandi Sherwood adds four goals and three assists while sophomore Cami Mavelian had three goals and four assists. Senior Abbi Saizow also contributed three goals on the year. Austin College has split time in goal between senior Emily Brockette and sophomore Franchesca Lozoya as they combined for 103 saves and three shutout. 

The University of Dallas, a team that appeared in the SCAC Championship a year ago, falling 1-0 to Trinity, returns to the SCAC Tournament this year as the No. 5 seed. The Crusaders (4-8-0 SCAC / 6-13-0) are led by junior Nicole Johnson who has 17 points including six goals and five assists while sophomore Rebecca Brunter chipped in six goals and an assist. Senior Emily Rogers contributed four goals on the year and sophomore Abigale Weisbrod added two goals and two assists. Dallas is led by one of the top keepers in the confernece in senior Brigid Hasson. The 2012 SCAC Tournament Defensive MVP led the conference with 117 saves on the year and also added two shutouts.

Rounding out the tournament in the Centenary College Ladies as the No. 6 seed. The Ladies (3-9 SCAC / 5-12-2) needed a last day upset of Austin College to punch their ticket into the tournament. Junior Carly Slovensky leads the Ladies offensive with six goals and 12 points on the year while sophomore Madison Alexander, who scored two goals including the game winner in the Austin College games, comes in with three goals and four assists for 10 points. Sophomore Amanda Atwell also contributed three goals on the year. Defensively, freshman Erica Coker has had a great rookie campaign, coming through with 100 saves (second in the SCAC) to go with three shutpouts and one combined shutout.
