TOWSON, Md. - In an announcement made
today by the NCAA, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
(SCAC) has been selected as the most recent honoree in the
quarterly NCAA/Division III Sports Information Directors of America
(D3SIDA) recognition program for outstanding work by athletics
communication directors.
"Athletics communicators play a crucial role in promoting the
Division III model of intercollegiate athletics, which encourages
student-athletes to follow their passions and develop their
potential," said Dan Dutcher, Vice President of NCAA Division III.
"This outstanding work from the SCAC is a laudable example of the
ways in which our member conferences and institutions portray the
Division III philosophy as it is practiced on our
campuses."
“The SCAC is honored to be recognized by the NCAA Division
III Sports Information Directors of America for the video we
produced last summer highlighting our league’s greatest asset
– its student-athletes,” said SCAC commissioner Dwayne
Hanberry. “Our goal, when we started this project, was to put
together a piece that told the story of Division III. What better
way to present that experience than through the eyes of a
student-athlete?“
Linked below, the video, which was shot last summer in Dallas,
Texas, using a male and a female student-athlete from each member
institution, was funded by the NCAA Strategic Initiatives Grant.

A panel of D3SIDA sports information directors selected the SCAC for the Why D3? SCAC Student-Athletes Share their Experiences video, which is being honored as the best work produced during the months of January through March 2013. The panel also awarded honorable mention to the University of Mary Washington and to Washington and Lee University for features produced at those institutions.
All of the honorees were judged on ways they portray the Division III model of intercollegiate athletics, and the SCAC video was cited for its advancement of the Division III attributes of Proportion, Comprehensive Learning, Passion and Citizenship. The recognition program, part of the Division III Identity Initiative, seeks to honor the best work – including news releases, feature articles, videos, blogs and other materials – produced by Division III campus and conference athletics communication offices.
