SUWANEE, Ga. - The first SCAC crossover of the 2010 season saw two of the league's three ranked teams go undefeated. Fifth-ranked Colorado College and Southwestern, the 17th-ranked team, combined to go 8-0 at the SCAC West/Central crossover at Southwestern.
AROUND THE SCAC
No. 20 Austin College put together a strong
weekend but suffered their first loss of the year at the hands of
No. 9-ranked Colorado College to go 3-1 at the SCAC West/Central in
Georgetown, Texas. The ‘Roos are now 13-1 overall on the year
and 2-1 in conference play. The ‘Roos won their first three
matches of the weekend, topping Millsaps 3-1 and
Birmingham-Southern 3-2 on Friday and Hendrix 3-0 on Saturday
before falling to the Tigers 3-0 to finish the weekend. Jessica
Fleming had another outstanding weekend for the ‘Roos,
averaging 4.2 kills and 2.0 blocks per set with a .426 attack
percentage and Jordan Anderton averaged 10.67 assists and 2.13 digs
per set with a .387 attack percentage. Jenna Wilson added averages
of 2.93 kills and 4.53 digs per set and Quinn McKee averaged 5.87
digs for the weekend.
Birmingham-Southern split this weekend to open
conference play at the SCAC West/Central Divisional at
Southwestern, losing to No. 17 Southwestern and No. 22 Austin
College on Friday, both in five sets, before rebounding on Saturday
to defeat Trinity and Rhodes, also both in five sets. BSC moves to
10-2 on the season with the split. Senior libero Jennifer McKannan
etched her name in the record books this weekend as she became
BSC’s all-time digs leader.
No. 7 Colorado College junior middle blocker Haley Hamilton had a career day during the 3-0 victory over Hendrix, posting career highs of 12 kills, four service aces and three solo blocks to pace the Tigers. Senior middle blocker Emily Perkins added nine kills, while junior setter Amy Schornack had 34 assists and tied with senior middle blocker Erika Pirotte for the team lead with nine digs. In the come-from-behind victory over Rhodes, freshman middle blocker Devin Wilkinson had five blocks, while Perkins added 3.5, and sophomore libero Laura Goldsmith posted 28 digs. Pirotte paced the offense with 11 kills, while junior right-side hitter Meredith Ballard added 10. Goldsmith also served three aces. The Tigers got a tougher than expected match from Millsaps College in their first match of the day, going five sets against the Majors. Colorado College took control early in the fifth set and pulled out the victory. The Tigers travel to Sewanee next weekend to face Centre and DePauw on Saturday, and then Sewanee and Southwestern on Sunday.
DePauw is 7-7 on the season after posting a 2-3
record last week including a fifth-place finish at its own
Invitational. The Tigers opened with a 3-1 loss to Mount St. Joseph
in the home opener. At the DePauw Tiger Invitational, the hosts
opened with a 3-0 win over Marietta and a 3-2 loss to Susquehanna.
In the final pool play match, DePauw won the opening two sets
against 13th-ranked Carthage, but lost 3-2. The Tigers won the
fifth place match with a 3-1 victory over Haverford. Madison Hoenig
was DePauw's only selection to the all-tournament team. Annie
Collier paced the Tigers with 3.05 kills per set and a .265 hitting
percentage, while Ali Smith led the team with 9.5 assists per set.
Kylee Lehrman recorded 14 service aces and Hoenig led the way with
3.3 digs per set. Kristen Chynoweth was the team leader with 1.05
blocks per set.
Hendrix suffered five losses this week with a
midweek 3-1 defeat at Williams Baptist University on Tuesday
evening and then a four-game skid at the first SCAC West vs.
Central Crossover of the season. The Warriors fell to No. 9
Colorado College (3-0) in their first match and then to Trinity
University (3-0) in the night cap on Friday. On Saturday,
Hendrix stretched its skid to nine games with two more 3-0
losses. Austin took a 25-15, 25-13, 25-21 sweep in the morning
match and then Millsaps earned a 25-13, 25-12, 25-22 win in the
final contest of the weekend. Hendrix falls to 4-10 overall
and 0-4 in SCAC play. Senior outside hitter Becca Clancy led
Hendrix with 29 kills (2.42 per game) and senior middle blocker
Leah Groat was close behind with 21 kills (1.75 per game) on the
weekend.
Millsaps went 1-3 this weekend at Southwestern. The matches were all close contests, with four sets requiring extra points to determine the winner. The Majors (9-5, 1-3 SCAC) fell to Austin College on Friday 3-1 and to host Southwestern, again, 3-1. Saturday’s first match with Colorado College took five sets to find a winner, with the Tigers coming out on top 3-2 in the fifth set (15-8). The Majors avoided the shutout Saturday afternoon against Hendrix, defeating the Warriors in three straight to salvage one win from the weekend. Raven Scott led the way with a .276 hitting percentage on the weekend with 39 kills. She posted a team-high 15 blocks across the four matches, including eight solo blocks at the net. Millsaps is off this week, but will return to action Wednesday, September 29 as they travel to New Orleans to take on the Loyola Wolfpack in a single game at 7:00 p.m.
Oglethorpe went 1-2 this past week. The Petrels
topped Wesleyan 3-0 but fell to Brewton Parker 3-2 last Tuesday
night. On Saturday, Oglethorpe was swept by Covenant 3-0 in Lookout
Mtn., Ga. The Petrels are now 3-5 on the season and will get
set to host Piedmont on September 20.
Rhodes finished 1-3 at this weekend’s SCAC
Central-West Divisional at Southwestern. The team defeated Trinity
in their opening match in a five set thriller. It was the
first time that Rhodes had defeated Trinity since 1991. Meagan
Mansfield led the team with 15 kills while Phylicia Douglas and
Lexie Krall combined for 18 kills on the Right Side for the
Lynx. Setters Michelle Quina and Nicole McAlvany combined for
47 assists while Libero Kayla McCrury led the team with 28
digs. Freshmen Middle Blocker Stephanie Renner led the Lynx
with three blocks. Unfortunately the team was not able to
carry the same momentum into their second match against Colorado
College. After taking the first set 25-18, the Tigers came
roaring back to defeat the Lynx in three straight sets. On Day
two, the Lynx lost to host Southwestern in three straight
sets. The Lynx were ahead in sets two and three but were
unable to finish off the sets for a win. Outside hitter Meagan
Mansfield led the Lynx with 9 kills while Freshmen Stephanie Renner
added 3 blocks for the Lynx. In the team’s final match up of
the tournament, the Lynx dropped another five set heartbreaker this
time to BSC. Freshmen Stephanie Renner led the team with eight
blocks, while Kayla McCrury and Nicole McAlvany combined for 11
service aces.
Sewanee dropped four matches over the weekend at
the Transylvania Invitational in Lexington, Ky. Sewanee fell to
Huntingdon College 3-0, Albion College 3-, Kenyon 3-0 and
Transylvania 3-0. Freshman Tarver Shimek led the Tigers with 27
kills on the weekend, including ten against Albion. Adrienne
Borchardt tallied 44 assists in the tournament. The Tigers will
return to action next weekend as they host SCAC east/west
divisional play.
No. 17 Southwestern opened up SCAC action this weekend by hosting the West/Central Cross. SU swept their matches as they took down Birmingham Southern 3-2, Millsaps 3-1, Rhodes 3-0 and Trinity 3-2. With the wins Southwestern improves to 11-3 on the season and begins 3-0 in the SCAC. Lindsay Thompson led with 55 kills and a .375 hitting percentage over the weekend. She also led the team in blocks with 22. Christina Nicholls recorded 165 assists and Allison Stubbs racked up 74 digs. Up next for the Pirates are Sewanee, Oglethorpe, Centre and Colorado at the West/East Cross in Sewanee, Tenn.
Trinity lost three out of four matches over the weekend at the SCAC West-Central Tournament in Georgetown, Texas. It marked the first time Trinity has ever lost three conference matches in the same weekend. Trinity opened the weekend with a narrow 3-2 loss to Rhodes, then defeated Hendrix 3-0 to split the first day of action. The Tigers then lost 3-2 to both Birmingham-Southern and Southwestern on Saturday. In all three losses, Trinity led 2-1 heading into the fourth set, but could not hang on for the wins. The Tigers resume SCAC play this weekend in the SCAC East-West Tournament at Sewanee. Trinity takes on DePauw and Centre on Saturday, then finishes the weekend against Oglethorpe and Austin College. Trinity returns home October 6, facing off against Texas Lutheran in a non-conference matchup.
