SUWANEE, Ga. - DePauw moved on step closer to repeating as SCAC champions with its 42-18 win over visiting league rival Rhodes on Oct. 9. The win left the Tigers as the only undefeated team in conference play. DePauw has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Centre, Millsaps and Rhodes.

Austin College used 17 unanswered fourth quarter points to pull away from Sewanee in a 34-17 victory, bringing their overall record to 3-2 on the season. The Tigers jumped on top early with a field goal but a Mitch Anderson 37 yarder followed by a 26 yard touchdown pass from Travis Zambiasi to Braydon MaQuar gave Austin College a 10-3 lead. The Tigers would come back to tie things up before Zambiasi found Jordan Schell for a 53 yard score to make it 17-10 at the half. Sewanee would tie things up once more, but a 36 yard field goal from Mitch Anderson to start the fourth quarter put the ‘Roos up for good and two touchdowns in a 16 second span, first a 37 yard pass from Blake Towery to Greg Harrell followed by a 34 yard fumble return by Ben Youngblood put the game away. Brogan Funderburg carried 18 times for 104 yards and Zambiasi finished the game throwing for 156 yards and two touchdowns, while MaQuar had five catches for 81 yards. Kenneth Eneh led the defense with 16 tackles including 1.5 for loss with a sack. Austin College heads back on the road this week to take on Birmingham-Southern.
Trailing 21-14 after one half of play, Centre out-scored Birmingham Southern 21-7 in the second half to rally for a 35-28 win Saturday, Oct. 9 at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky. The win, the first at home for the Colonels, puts Centre at 4-2 overall this year. The win marks the sixth straight victory over the Panthers and the third straight of the season for Centre. Junior running back Jonathan Pinque rushed for two more touchdowns against Birmingham Southern giving him eight for the year. With two more, he will have rushed for 10 or more touchdowns in each of his first three seasons at Centre.
Millsaps got back on the smiling side of the scoreboard this week with a 35-19 win over the Huntingdon College Hawks. The Majors (3-3) scored first and never trailed en route to their first-ever victory over the Hawks in the teams’ four meetings dating back to 2005. The game went back-and-forth until the very end. The Majors wrapped it up with 3:22 remaining in the game when a Nick Plagenhoef pass went askew right into the outstretched hands of Marshall Burgin, who promptly ran the ball 65 yards the other way for the final score of the game, 35-19. Garrett Pinciotti passed for 216 yards on the day and scrambled his way to another 15 on the ground. Shane Bowser led the ground attack for the Majors, racking up 51 net yards on the day on 14 carries. He also led the receiver corps with 82 yards on six catches for a combined all purpose total of 133 yards on the day. He was second only to Michael Galatas who amassed 111 yards on kick returns alone (52 long) for 195 total yards on the day. Will Hawkins paced the defense again with another Herculean effort on the line with 14 total tackles for the game. The Majors will take to the road next week as they resume SCAC play with the Rhodes. DePauw jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and held on to defeat Rhodes 42-18, in a SCAC at Greencastle, Ind. on Saturday, October 9th. The Lynx rallied for 18 3rd quarter points to fight back into the game. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Perkins hit sophomore receiver Buddy Legens on a 4 yard scoring strike to get Rhodes on the board with 12:22 to play in the third quarter. Rhodes recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove 59 yards in nine plays, with Perkins rushing in for the score to cut the lead to 28-12. Perkins accounted for 332 yards of total offense to lead the Lynx. Perkins completed 21 passes on 43 attempts for 248 yards and two touchdowns. Perkins also rushed for 84 yards on 11 carries and scored one touchdown. Sophomore Jack Lartigue caught 5 passes for 93 yards. Rhodes falls to 2-3 on the season and drops to 1-1 in SCAC play.
Sewanee gave Austin College everything it could handle on Saturday, but a late fourth quarter push by Austin put the Tigers away, 34-17. After covering 39 yards, on rushes by Zeke Wilson, Sewanee found themselves at the Austin four-yard line. After a Sewanee punt, Blake Towery completed a 37-yard pass to Greg Harrell for an Austin touchdown, pushing the score to 27-17. Schurlknight finished the day 18 of 28 passing with two interceptions. Chad Morehead hauled in eleven receptions for 64 yards. Wilson gained 96 rushing, while also tallying 40 receiving yards. Zac Atkins led the Tiger defense with nine tackles, including two for a loss. Sewanee falls to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in SCAC play and will host Trinity next weekend.
Trinity suffered its third defeat in the past four games on Saturday, losing 42-14 at Texas Lutheran. The Tigers were not able to recover from a 21-0 halftime deficit, though the team did return a fumble for a touchdown for the first time since 2004, as linebacker Jarrod Burns went 65 yards for Trinity’s first score of the game. Daniel South had five receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown, while Caleb Urban had his eighth career game with 100 or more yards in kickoff returns – three of which have come this season. The game marked just the second loss in the last 11 meetings since the series with TLU was renewed in 2000 – both of which have come on the road for the Tigers. Trinity will be on the road for the third consecutive game this weekend, facing off against Sewanee. Trinity holds an overall record of 19-4 in the series, having won 17 consecutive games.
