ATLANTA, Ga. - The Oglethorpe athletics department is pleased to announce the hiring of Jan Spiro as head coach of the Stormy Petrels men's and women's track and field programs. Spiro will begin his coaching duties immediately.

"We're thrilled to have Coach Spiro on board to continue the success our Track and Field teams have enjoyed over the years," said athletics director Jay Gardiner, adding "Jan's strong ties to the Oglethorpe community and long history of success in the sport of track and field made him an easy choice for the job."

Spiro joins the Oglethorpe family after many years as a middle and long distance coach for the Atlanta Track Club where he has trained and guided numerous American and Canadian age group champions. Spiro also currently serves as the cross country community coach for the Galloway School based here in Atlanta.

As a competitive athlete, Spiro was a member of the Atlanta Track Club's Masters mile team which set a world relay record in 2001. He is also a former USA Track and Field Southeastern Masters mile champion and is a 3-time Boston Marathon finisher.

Spiro is a graduate of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and resides with his wife, Wendy, in the Brookhaven section of Atlanta, just a strong javelin throw from the Stormy Petrel campus.
