Men's Basketball Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Week four of the 2010-11 season saw just four SCAC teams in action as Austin College, DePauw, Oglethorpe and Rhodes were the only teams competing in non-conference competition. Austin College's Josh Saunders led the way for the SCAC as he fell just one assists shy of a triple-double in his lone game.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College extended its winning streak to three with a 79-64 win over Rhema Bible College on December 11. Josh Saunders was one of four Kangaroo players to score in double figures. He led the way with game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds. Saunders was just one assist shy of a triple-double. Also scoring in double figures for the ‘Roos were Walter Phillips (13), Ransom Okpala (12) and Jordan Hancock (12). Austin College (5-3 overall, 2-0 SCAC) returns to action December 15 when they host Texas-Dallas. Tip is set for 8 p.m. The Kangaroos then return to SCAC play on December 31 when they host Southwestern (6 p.m.) and on January 2, hosting Trinity (3 p.m.)
 
Birmingham-Southern had the week off. The Panthers (5-1 overall, 1-1 SCAC) return to action December 17-18 when they prepare to host the annual BSC Holiday Classic. Birmingham-Southern will first square off against Covenant on December 17 at 7 p.m. The Panthers conclude the two-day tournament when they host instate rival Huntingdon on December 18 at 3 p.m. BSC then will take nearly two weeks off during the holidays and return to SCAC action when the Panthers host Sewanee on New Year’s Eve and Oglethorpe (January 2nd).
   
Centre had the week off. The Colonels (5-1 overall, 2-0 SCAC) return to action on Thursday, December 16 when they host Asbury. Centre will then enjoy a nearly two-week break for the holidays and then host the Papa John’s/Country Inn Hearth Tournament. The Colonels will take on Allegheny (Pa.) on December 28 at 7 p.m. and then play either Hanover (Ind.) or Ohio Northern at 5 or 7 p.m. on December 29.

Colorado College was idle last week. The Tigers play the last of three games against upper-division opponents on Tuesday when Division II Colorado State University-Pueblo visits Reid Gymnasium. CC is 1-1 in those games with a victory at Division I Air Force and a loss at Division II Regis University. Senior forward Brady Ohlsen needs just two rebounds to become the fourth player in program history to record 600 in a career and would become only the third player in school history to own 600 career rebounds and 1,000 career points. Senior guard Nick Rose is only 17 points away from moving into 10th place on the program’s career scoring list. He also is five three-point baskets shy of climbing into 10th place on that list. After Tuesday’s game, the Tigers will be idle until Dec. 28 and 29 when they play the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Whitworth University at the D3Hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas.

DePauw recorded a 91-74 win over Trine on December 11. Pacing the way for the Tigers was Sean Haseley who scored 21 points on 5 of 10 shooting including 4 of 8 from three-point range. Also chipping in for DePauw was Joe Bergfeld (15 points on 7 of 8 shooting and Drew Willis (14 points and four rebounds). The Tigers shot a sizzling 61.8 percent (34 of 55) for the game, including a white-hot 68 percent (17 of 25) in the first half. The Tigers return to action on December 18 when they travel to Terre Haute, Ind. to square off against Rose-Hulman. DePauw then breaks for the holidays and then travels to Elmhurst College to participate in the Bluejay Classic on December 29-30. The Tigers play host Elmhurst on December 29 at 8 p.m. The Tigers conclude the tournament with a game against either Calvin College or Benedictine University on December 30.

Hendrix had the week off. The Warriors (2-5 overall, 0-2 SCAC) return to action on Friday, December 17 when they travel to Jackson, Miss. to square off against SCAC rival Millsaps. Game time is set for 3 p.m. CT. Last year the Warriors split their two meetings with the Majors. Hendrix picked up a 71-67 overtime win at home in the teams’ first meeting last year. The Warriors were paced by Nick Heathscott, who scored 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He shot a sizzling 10 of 12 from the field. Hendrix then dropped the second meeting, 49-38 at Millsaps. The Warriors were once again led by Heathscott, who tallied a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. After this week’s game at Millsaps, the Warriors will take nearly two weeks off before hosting LeTourneau on December 30.

Millsaps had the week off. The Majors (3-3 overall, 0-2 SCAC) return to action on Monday, December 13 when they host LaGrange at 3 p.m. The Majors will host SCAC rival Hendrix on December 17 at 3 p.m. before traveling to Memphis, Tenn. for a non-conference matchup with league rival Rhodes on December 18 at 5 p.m. Millsaps will then break for the holidays and host the Millsaps New Year’s Classic December 30-31. The Majors will play Rust on December 30 at 7 p.m. and then play either Belhaven (Miss.) or Mississippi College on December 31.

Oglethorpe won its only contest of the week by topping Berry College, 69-66. A three-ball by Alec Pitts increased the Petrel lead to 32-20 with 5:10 to play in the first half before Berry made a run to cut it to 4. After Todd Ward scored on the Petrels first possession of the second half, Oglethorpe would only make two more field goals over the next 10 minutes of clock as Berry used a 20-5 run to open up a 50-45 lead. OU’s Alex Richey converted a layup with 6:43 remaining to trim the Viking lead to three. After several empty trips for both teams, Ward went 1 of 2 at the free throw line to cut the deficit to two. Richey lead four Petrels in double-figures with 18 points on the night on 7 of 11 shooting from the field. Pitts nailed 6 of his 8 shots for 18 points and Kennedy drilled 5 of his 7 looks to post 13 points. Ward finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Oglethorpe is now 5-3 on the season and will have a week off before facing Chapman in Los Angeles, Calif. next Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.  
  
Rhodes lost its only game of the week, to Rust, 75-66, on December 7. John Dunavant led the Lynx with 14 points on 5 of 11 shooting, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Theo Hartwell was the only other Rhodes player to score in double-figures. Hartwell was a perfect 5 of 5 shooting on the night. The Lynx (2-6 overall, 0-2 SCAC) return to action on December 18 when they host league member Millsaps in a non-conference game at 5 p.m. Rhodes then takes a break for the holidays and returns to SCAC play on December 31 hosting Oglethorpe and January 2 hosting Sewanee.  
 
Sewanee was off this week but the Tigers will host the 15th Annual Lon Varnell Classic this weekend in Sewanee. Sewanee will host Webster University in the first game of the Classic on Friday night, before Webster goes up against Berry College on Saturday. Sewanee will close out the Classic on Sunday against the Vikings of Berry at 1 p.m.
 
Southwestern had a bye week. The Pirates (2-5 overall, 1-0 SCAC) return to action on December 17th and 18th hosting the Southwestern/Trinity Classic with visiting teams Hardin-Simmons and Albion.
  
Trinity
had the week off. The Tigers (0-6 overall, 0-1SCAC) will return to action December 17-18 to face Albion and Hardin-Simmons in Georgetown, Texas, as part of the Southwestern/Trinity Holiday Classic. Trinity will then break for the holidays and pick up SCAC play by traveling to Colorado College on New Year’s Eve, December 31st and Austin College on January 2nd.
