BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - No. 1 Sewanee and No. 2 Colorado College both won in the semifinals today of the 2011 SCAC Women's Lacrosse Championship, advancing to the title game tomorrow at noon in Panther Stadium. Sewanee/Birmingham-Southern | Colorado College/Centre | Official Site
Sewanee defeated No. 4 Birmingham-Southern in the first
semifinal today, 20-11, and No. 2 Colorado College defeated No. 3
Centre College 18-4 in the second game.
In the game between BSC and Sewanee, the teams traded goals in the
first three minutes before Sewanee scored five straight to go up
6-1 by the 22:31 mark. BSC scored twice after that to cut it to
6-3, but the Tigers scored eight straight goals to close the half
with a 14-3 lead.
The teams traded goals again, twice, to open the second half, and
the Panthers then scored three straight to cut the lead to 16-8
with 19:51 remaining. Sewanee scored another goal, but BSC answered
with two, cutting it to 17-10 with 7:48 left to play. Sewanee
proceeded to score three straight, though, putting the Tigers up
20-10. BSC was able to score once more before the end of the
game.
Molly Arnold led the Tigers with four goals, and Hanna Moran and
Amy Nusbaum led with three ground balls each. Arnold also led with
six draw controls. Nusbaum, the goalkeeper, played the entire game
in goal and recorded 13 saves.
For BSC, junior Chelsea Van Voorhis led with three goals, and
freshman Hailey Massa led with seven ground balls and four caused
turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Katie Bates made 15 saves.
In the game between Centre and Colorado College, the Tigers
dominated play, going up 3-0 to start the game and leading 12-2 at
halftime. Colorado College out-scored Centre 6-2 in the second
half.
Leslie Jacoby, Ellie Cole, and Kate Krieger led the Tigers with
three goals apiece, while Sarah Mastey led Centre with two of its
four.
In goal for Colorado College, Abby Fink started and played the
first half, making seven saves. Katy Stetson came in for the second
half and recorded four saves. For Centre, Lauren Esterle played all
60 minutes and grabbed 13 saves.
