Birmingham-Southern Opens SCAC Women's Lacrosse Championship With Dominating Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.In the first-ever SCAC tournament game to be played by any Birmingham-Southern team, the fourth-seeded BSC women's lacrosse team defeated fifth-seed Millsaps today, 21-1, in Panther Stadium. Box Score | Official Site

The Panthers now advance to face top-seeded Sewanee tomorrow at 11 a.m. No. 2 Colorado College and No. 3 Centre College will face off at 1:30 p.m., and the championship game will take place Sunday at noon.

Junior Lyndsay Griffin led the Panthers today with six goals, followed by junior Chelsea Van Voorhis with five and senior Ashley Johnson with four. Sophomore Rebecca Klementz and freshman Madeline Golden also had two goals apiece, and junior Alexis Sweda and freshman Hailey Massa scored one each.

Sophomore Stephanie Gore led the defense with nine ground balls and five caused turnovers, and Griffin led with nine draw controls. Junior goalkeeper Katie Bates played all 60 minutes and recorded three saves.

For Millsaps, Haleigh Williams scored the lone goal. Keeper Madelyn Walker recorded 17 saves, playing the duration of the game.

BSC out-shot Millsaps, 48-4, led ground balls 38-17, and committed 18 turnovers to the Majors' 31. Draw controls were almost even at 13-11 in favor of the Panthers. BSC was 12-of-16 on clears, while Millsaps was 8-of-19.
