MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Rhodes College baseball standout Hunter Chandler has been awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Chandler, a recent Rhodes graduate, adds to impressive academic credentials as he was recently named Capital One Academic All-American® as well.
On the field, Chandler earned All-SCAC first-team honors as a pitcher after posting a 5-2 record with a 1.48 ERA. In 61 innings pitched, the Gainesville, Ga. native struck out 48 batters while limiting hitters to a .228 batting average. He walked just 13 batters all season on his way to tallying a 3.70 strikeout to walk ratio for the season.
His performance in the 2011 SCAC tournament will go down as perhaps one of the gutsiest performances in league history. In Rhodes' historic 8-7 win over Oglethorpe University in 21 innings, Chandler pitched 10 2/3 innings in relief scattering nine hits, one earned run and struck out four in the longest game in NCAA Division III history. His performance earned him a spot on the SCAC All-Tournament team.
In the classroom, Chandler maintained a 3.97 Grade Point Average (GPA) as an economics and business major. He was also named a to the Capital One Academic All-District® and Capital One Academic All-America® teams for his academic work.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.
The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. Each sports season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.
