Baseball Recap (Week 6) - Around The SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Two pitching performances stood out in the SCAC during the past week. Sewanee first-year pitcher Lee Schurlknight tossed a no-hitter in the Tigers' 19-0 win over Rust on March 10 while Trinity senior pitcher Noah Solomon tossed a complete game shutout in a 10-0 win over Millsaps March 13.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College dropped a 9-1 decision at Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Kangaroos struggled at the plate as they only batted .188 (6 of 32) on the day. The Cru jumped out to a 6-0 lead through three innings before earning the 9-1 win. Austin College’s lone run came in the top of the seventh as Austin Vaughan doubled in Alan Parrent. Shane Williams picked up the loss in dropping to 0-2 on the year for the ‘Roos. Austin College (3-11, 1-8 SCAC) returns to action on Monday, March 14 when the Kangaroos travel to Texas-Dallas.

Birmingham-Southern (No. 9 – ABCA) split at home this week, defeating Emory & Henry College, 7-0, Wednesday, but falling to Hampden-Sydney College, 3-1, Thursday. BSC was supposed to play Emory & Henry on Tuesday as well, but the game was canceled due to rain. Senior right-hander Drew Crofton got the shutout win against Emory & Henry on Wednesday, while junior left-hander Jordan Burchett took the loss against Hampden-Sydney. BSC is at home for a single game this Wednesday against LaGrange College before opening conference play on the road this weekend against Centre.

Centre split four games, falling to Transylvania (11-4) and Maryville (9-5) in the first two games of the week before sweeping a doubleheader against Hanover (5-0, 4-1) to finish the week. The loss to Transylvania was the first time this season the Colonels have allowed 10 runs or more in a game, while the two wins over Hanover marked the seventh and eighth times this year Centre has allowed two runs or less in a game. The Colonels, now 6-8, will travel to play Thomas More Wednesday before returning home to host Birmingham-Southern on the weekend in the first SCAC games for both teams.

DePauw posted a 4-2 record for the week with a doubleheader sweep of Anderson (3-2, 2-1) on Tuesday before defeating Manchester (10-3) and Alma (9-1) on Saturday. The Tigers dropped a pair on Sunday with losses to Manchester (14-2) and Marian, Ind. (10-9). DePauw hit .343 for the week and averaged nearly six runs and 12 hits per game. Sam Swafford and Ben Gardner each collected 11 hits in the six games, while Swafford led with nine RBI. The Tigers posted three complete games for the week and DePauw pitchers held the opposition to a .256 batting average.

Hendrix dropped a 7-6 nail-biter against No. 11 UT-Tyler on Monday and then jumped out to a 2-1 series lead against SCAC foe Southwestern on Saturday and Sunday. The Warriors improve to 7-9 overall and 5-6 in conference play. Hendrix now owns a 0.5 game lead over the Pirates for third in the SCAC West. The No. 11 Patriots came back from a 4-2 deficit despite being out-hit by the Warriors 12-10. Hendrix was scoreless over the fourth through seventh innings until Forgerson drove in Raskin and Radack on a double in the eighth frame. The Warriors stranded the tying run on third base in the eighth. Hendrix first year Thomas Weber pitched to the last batter of the fourth and was pinned with the loss after 3.0 innings, six hits, four runs (two earned), and three walks. Hendrix rallied for a come-from-behind win in extra innings over Southwestern in Saturday’s opener and then the Pirates survived another late Warrior surge for a narrow win in the night cap. Senior left-hander Jordan Suydam entered for the last two outs of the ninth to pick up his second win of the year. Junior right-hander Teddy Smoyer started on the bump for 8.0 innings, seven strikeouts and just two walks.

No. 24 Millsaps went 1-2 this week, but got the series split at Trinity to maintain their position in the Western Division standings. Rain forced Tuesday's game with Huntingdon College to be pushed to Wednesday. The Majors stranded six base runners in their final two at-bats, allowing two ninth inning errors to cost them their 12th win of the year and their first home loss of the season, 3-2. They turned things around on Saturday with a tenth-inning explosion. The Majors scored eight runs in the tenth, including two home runs from Will Hawkins, to take the series opener 10-4 from the Tigers. Trinity got revenge on Sunday, however, as the Majors' offense seemed spent. TU's Noah Solomon shut down the Majors' bats, allowing just three hits on the day in the 10-0 rout. The Majors will return to Twenty Field this week for a pair of single games against Illinois Wesleyan. The first is Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

Oglethorpe
went 2-0 this week, topping Hampden-Sydney (W, 5-1) at the Gwinnett Braves’ Coolray Field on Tuesday and rallying to beat Bates (W, 10-9) on Thursday. Against the Tigers, the Petrels used a three-run third inning and an excellent outing from starting pitcher Mark Hoban to take control of the game. Mark Hoban allowed a run and four hits over five innings of work. He picked up the win, advancing his record to 2-1 on the year. Versus Bates, the Petrels used a three-run rally in the ninth inning to come out ahead in a back-and-forth affair Thursday evening, 10-9. The Petrels only tallied one hit in the inning, but it was the hit that won the game. Oglethorpe is now 5-7 on the season and will face Arcadia on Monday before heading to Florida for spring break action.

Rhodes went 1-2 this week with an 11-1 mid-week victory over visiting MacMurray College before traveling to Port Charlotte, Fla. and the Snow Bird Classic for Spring Break. The first game in Florida saw Rhodes fall 3-2 to #1 Heidelberg University. On Sunday the Lynx fell to Carthage College 3-2. Rhodes will take on the College of Wooster on Tuesday and Wednesday to finish their trip. Rhodes will return to Memphis this coming weekend to open conference play against DePauw.

Behind a no-hitter from freshman pitcher Lee Schurlknight, Sewanee picked up a 19-0 win over Rust on Thursday before finishing the week with a 2-2 record. Against the Bearcats, Shurlknight was backed up by a Tiger offense that pounded out a combined 37 hits in two games as Sewanee swept the doubleheader. In the first game, Schurlknight pitched a complete seven-inning game, striking out 12 and walking two in his first win as a Tiger. Chris Mauro, Franklin Pogue and Colin Barrera each added three hits in the effort. In game two, the Tigers prevailed 17-3 as Barrera picked up the win, pitching a complete game and giving up two earned runs on three hits. Connor Liston went 5-for-5 with three doubles and two RBIs. The Tigers’ struggled in their final two games of the week, as they dropped decisions to Drew and Vassar in the first two days of the Russ-Matt Invitational in Lakeland, Florida. Sewanee fell to Drew, 7-3, on Saturday before falling to Vassar College, 10-5, on Sunday. The Tigers are 3-7 on the season and will return to action Monday when they take on Washington College at 11 a.m.

Southwestern played host to Robert Morris (Ill.) on Wednesday afternoon and after winning 4-3 in extra innings the Pirates posted a 10-2 blowout in game two. The weekend sent Southwestern back to conference action and the road to face Hendrix College. SU was narrowly defeated in game one, falling 5-4 and then turned around to win game two of the double header 10-8. Sunday, fortunes were reversed as the Pirates fell 10-7 in the final game of the three game series. Southwestern currently sits at 8-10 on the year and 4-6 in the SCAC. They return to non-conference play to face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday and Cardinal Stritch for two games at home on Wednesday and the University of Dallas on Saturday.

No. 12 Trinity went 3-1 over the past week, sweeping two games from DeSales, then splitting a two-game SCAC series with Millsaps. The opener with Millsaps featured about every different kind of game you could ask for. It was a low-scoring pitcher’s duel through eight innings, then after a two-run ninth by the visitors, Trinity hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the inning that forced extra innings. At that point, it turned into a slugfest as Millsaps scored eight runs to pull off the win. Fortunes were reversed in Sunday’s game as Tiger senior Noah Solomon pitched a three-hit complete-game shutout to split the SCAC series. The ninth-inning home run came off the bat of senior Kyle Felix, and it was the 30th round-tripper of his career. That ties three other players for the Trinity record, and ties for a spot in the top 10 in SCAC history as well. Trinity will play five games this week, with four of those coming on the road. After a Tuesday night matchup with NAIA’s Cardinal Stritch University, the Tigers head to Seguin, Texas to take on Texas Lutheran University in the first of a two-game season series.  Trinity will finish its SCAC regular season series with Austin over the weekend, playing in Sherman, Texas for three games. Earlier this year, Trinity swept a two-game series from Austin College at home, winning 8-4 and 15-10.
