Rhodes' Henin Earns NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Rhodes College women's track & field standout Sandy Henin has been awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Henin helped lead the Lynx women's track & field team to its fourth consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship.

Henin turned in a strong SCAC championship meet by earning All-SCAC honors in multiple events. She helped lead Rhodes to a win in the 4X400-meter relay with a time of 3:58.97. She added to her meet by earning All-SCAC laurels with wins in the 800-meter (2:18.19) and 1,500-meter (4:48.27) runs.

At the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Henin earned All-American honors with a fifth place finish in the 800-meter run. Henin clocked a time of 2:12.98. The time was nearly six seconds faster than her winning time in the SCAC championship meet.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.

The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. Each sports season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.
