Volleyball Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Centre and Southwestern both posted solid weekends as the two teams went a combined 7-0 at their home tournaments over the Halloween holiday weekend. The Colonels picked up a win over rival Transylvania while the Pirates knocked off fifth-ranked Eastern (Pa.).

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College went 3-1 at the Southwestern Halloween Tournament over the weekend, bringing their final regular season record to 28-8 this season. The 'Roos topped Huston-Tillotson 3-1, Lycoming College 3-0 and Texas Lutheran University 3-2 with the team's lone loss coming against No. 5-ranked Eastern. Jordan Anderton put up strong numbers on the weekend, registering 30 assists against Lycoming and 29 against Eastern and Jessica Fleming had only four hitting errors all weekend while once again leading the team in kills and blocks. Quinn McKee had a good weekend at the libero position as well, tallying 21 digs against Huston-Tillotson and 14 more against Lycoming. Austin College heads to the SCAC Championship this weekend where they will take on No. 4-seed and host Trinity University on Friday.
  
Birmingham-Southern went 1-3 this past weekend at the Emory National Invitational. On Friday, they lost to Randolph-Macon and the second-ranked Eagles. On Saturday, BSC lost to Washington & Lee in a five-set thrilled, and defeated Berry College. Over the weekend, senior libero Jennifer McKannan, already BSC’s career digs leader, achieved another impressive feat as she surpassed 2,000 career digs. The Panthers wrap up the 2010 season this Tuesday on the road, traveling to Montgomery to face Faulkner University at 7pm CT.

Centre played at home for the first time since September 18 as they hosted their annual Halloween Bash tournament on Friday October 29 and Saturday October 30. The team finished with a perfect 3-0 record and only dropped one set the entire weekend. Friday night was also a Dig Pink Event where Centre was able to raise almost $3,000 for breast cancer research. The Colonels have now won six straight matches and seven of their last eight, bringing their record to 17-17 on the year. Next up for the Colonels will the SCAC Championships hosted by Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas . Centre will take on Oglethorpe in the first round.

No. 10 Colorado College saw its eight-match winning streak stopped with a three-set loss at Colorado Christian University on Thursday night. The Tigers slipped to 0-3 against Division II opponents from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with their first loss to the Cougars since Oct. 18, 2006. Senior middle blocker Erika Pirotte led the Tigers with 10 kills, while senior middle blocker Emily Perkins added eight. Freshman Jaira Wilsey made her first career start and finished with three kills and a block. Perkins also paced CC with eight digs. Perkins needs 54 kills to break former teammate Anna Clithero’s (2005-08) school record of 1,664. She also needs only 65 digs to join Clithero as the only players with 1,600 career kills and digs. Colorado College plays host to cross-town rival CU-Colorado Springs on Tuesday night in its final tune-up for the SCAC Tournament.

DePauw dropped to 20-13 on the season after suffering a pair of home losses. DePauw lost to Bluffton 3-2 and then 3-0 to Marian, Ind. Against Bluffton, Abby Balbach and Paige Thompson each had 11 kills, while Ali Smith totaled 45 assists. Madison Hoenig led with two service aces and 19 digs, while Kristen Chynoweth had four blocks. In the Marian match, Annie Collier paced the Tigers with 11 kills and shared the team lead in blocks with Chynoweth as each had two. Smith totaled 33 assists, while Balbach led with 12 digs and Kylee Lehrman had two service aces. DePauw has the number-three seed at this weekend's SCAC Championship and opens play in a quarterfinal match against the Sewanee-Rhodes winner.
  
Hendrix went 2-0 this weekend as host of the 2010 Hendrix Ghost Host. The Warriors earned a 3-0 win over Rust and a 3-1 win over Williams Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Grove Gymnasium. First year outside hitter Jordan Spennato stepped up in a big way to lead the team with eight kills against Rust. Senior outside hitter Becca Clancy added six kills and senior middle blocker Leah Groat tallied five kills. First year setter Zoe Calhoun paced the team with 25 assists, while senior defensive specialists Sara Gawor and Kim Larson made 13 and 10 digs, respectively. First year middle blocker Alyssa Jaksich was in on four block assists.

Millsaps traveled up to St. Louis this week to participate in the Washington University Classic. The Majors dropped all four of their matches in the round robin tournament. The Majors fell to Culver-Stockton in the opening game on Friday 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-19) then to Hanover College 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 24-26, 25-15). On Saturday they faced hosts Washington, losing 3-1 (17-25, 12-25, 25-23, 13-25), before dropping the final match 3-0 (31-33, 22-25, 19-25) to Dominican University.

Oglethorpe went 2-3 in five contests this past week to raise their record to 9-24 on the season. The team will travel to Texas to compete in the SCAC Tournament this weekend.

Rhodes finished 3-1 at this weekend’s Spook Fest. The Lynx  began the day by defeating 27th ranked Millikin 3-1. Freshmen middle blocker Bethany Gunn led the team with 7 kills, 6 blocks and 5 service aces. Outside hitter Meagan Mansfield led all attackers with 18 digs. Libero Kayla McCrury anchored the defense with 25 digs, which brings her career total to 2,223. In the team’s final match, the Lynx defeated LaGrange in three straight sets. The team dropped its opening match on Sunday to Illinois College in five sets. Mansfield led the Lynx with 16 kills. The team won its final match of the season defeating Huntingdon in three straight sets. Mansfield again led the team with 10 kills. For her play on the weekend, Meagan Mansfield was selected to the Spook Fest  all tournament team.  

Sewanee picked up its second win of the year this week with a 3-0 victory over Rust on Wednesday. The Tigers dropped two matches on Saturday, falling to Piedmont in straight sets and to Centre 3-1. Against Rust, the Tigers easily picked up the first two sets of the match, before being challenged in the third set. Adrienne Borchardt paced the Tigers with five kills while Erin Brahm contributed seven assists. Liz Boddiford tallied five aces and Tarver Shimek added six digs. In the Saturday match with Piedmont, Boddiford led Sewanee with five kills, while Brahm added nine assists and eight digs. Against Centre, Boddiford led with eight kills and Brahm picked up eight assists and a season-high 20 digs. The Tigers will participate in the SCAC volleyball tournament this weekend in San Antonio, Texas.

No. 18 Southwestern closed out the regular season by hosting the annual Halloween Invitational. Eight teams joined the Pirates in Georgetown for two days of action. Day one faced the Pirates against Texas-Tyler in game one. The Pirates easily handled the Patriots 3-0. The final game of the day pitted #20 SU against the #5 team in the nation, Eastern. The Pirates prevailed in five games. On day two Southwestern once again opened big, easily defeating St. Thomas (Texas) in three straight and then took down Texas Lutheran 3-1 to close out the tournament. Lauren Brown and Christina Nicholls were selected to the All-Tournament team with Brown earning MVP honors. Southwestern ends the regular season at 29-5, riding a 14 match win streak. They will be the #2 seed in the SCAC tournament this weekend and will face the winner of Centre/Oglethorpe on Friday.

Trinity
went 1-3 at its toughest tournament of the season over the weekend, facing off against four opponents ranked in the top 20 nationally. Trinity defeated 17th-ranked UW-Oshkosh, but lost to 12th-ranked St. Thomas and 13th-ranked Heidelberg. The Tigers went five sets with 10th-ranked Carthage – the tournament hosts – but fell in the regular season finale. Trinity will host the 2010 SCAC Championships this weekend, bringing in 10 conference schools for the two-day event. The Tigers have won two of the three SCAC Tournaments since its revival in 2007, and have won 15 SCAC titles overall.
