DePauw & Sewanee Women's Tennis Teams Fall in NCAA Third Round

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - In a match that came down to just the number-one singles match on the court, sixth-ranked Denison advanced to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals following a 5-4 win over #17 DePauw in the third round of the national tournament. Official Site

Denison scored the match's first point after its number-two doubles team of Kelsey Geppner and Alex Marcell defeated DePauw's Elizabeth Young and Meg Crowley by an 8-4 score.

The Big Red made it 2-0 when the number-one tandem of Kristin Cobb and Sarah Short topped Janelle Arita and Kelly Gebert, 8-3. DePauw trimmed the lead to 2-1 as its number-three doubles team of Tricia Wilks and Lizzy Whitlatch beat Kate Westenberger and Jane Lent, 8-5.

Singles play started outside but was moved indoors due to rain during the first set of each. Katie Regan of DePauw evened the score with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lilianna Broussalian at sixth singles. Denison's Westenberger gave her team a 3-2 advantage following a 6-2, 6-3 win at number-five singles over Young.

Marcell made it 4-2 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Crowley at fourth singles, but DePauw closed the gap to 4-3 when Gebert rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Short at the number-two slot.

Wilks then evened the score at 4-4 with a 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 win over Geppner and, just minutes later, Cobb wrapped up a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Arita.

Denison improved to 18-4, while the Tigers finished the season at 14-10. Arita and Gebert will represent DePauw at the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships with Arita competing in singles and the pair playing in doubles.

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The #18 Sewanee women's tennis team bowed out of the 2011 NCAA Tournament Saturday with a 5-0 loss to #3 Emory University. After a short rain delay, the Eagles swept all three doubles matches before clinching the win with victories at #2 and #3 singles. Sewanee earned a spot in the third round with an upset win over #13 Washington-St. Louis on Friday, while Emory found their way to the third round with a 5-0 defeat of Agnes Scott.  Official Site

After being forced indoors for the second day in a row because of rain, the Tigers took to the courts for doubles play. All three matches ended at virtually the same time as the visiting Eagles swept the trio of games. Gabrielle Clark and Lorne McManigle picked up an 8-4 win over Kate Stanford and Jenny Liles at #1 doubles, while Zahra Dawson and Jordan Wylie were 8-2 winners over Michelle Flume and Anne Garland at the two spot. Emory's Malavika Padmanabhan and Brenna Kelly earned an 8-3 victory over Laura Szyperski and Lindsay Wilburn at #3 doubles to complete the sweep.

Trailing 3-0, Sewanee sent their #1-#3 players to the courts for singles play. After nearly two hours of singles play, Liles found herself on the losing end of a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Wylie, while McManigle's 6-2, 6-2 win over Flume gave Emory the 5-0 victory. Stanford and Clark had battled to a 2-2 draw in the second set before the match was called.

Sewanee closes out the season with a 21-7 overall record, while Emory moves to 21-4. The Eagles will continue on to the NCAA Quarterfinals in Claremont, California where they will face Washington & Lee. W&L defeated Carnegie Mellon 5-4 on Saturday to punch their ticket to the quarterfinals.
