Tiger Tennis Players Win in Singles and Doubles at ITA Championships

Mobile, Ala. - The two Trinity Tigers men's tennis players were victorious in Division III singles and doubles Wednesday at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.

Senior Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake, Texas (Carroll) beat Andrew La Cava of Whitman 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in a singles play-in match at Copeland-Cox Tennis Center. Cocanougher faces third-seeded Eric Shulman of Christopher Newport at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

The doubles team of Cocanougher and senior Cory Kowal of Austin, Texas (Anderson) outfought La Cava and Conor Holton-Burke 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (9-7), 10-6 (super tiebreak), also in a play-in match. Cocanougher and Kowal, the top-seeded doubles team, will play Jake Macey and Eric Scanlan of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 1 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Regional champions from the NCAA Divisions II and III, along with the NAIA and JUCO (junior college), compete at the National Small College Championships. Finals in the respective divisions are held on Saturday, followed by the "Super Bowl." The division champions play each other, which culminates in championship matches Sunday.

Cocanougher and Kowal won the ITA Southwest Region Doubles Championship Oct. 3 at Trinity, and are making their third appearance in the National Small College Championships. Cocanougher won the the regional singles title.
