SUWANEE, Ga. - Colorado College and Southwestern became the first two teams to learn of their seeding for the upcoming SCAC Volleyball Championship tournament Nov. 5-6. The Tigers earned the #1 seed while the Pirates earned the league's #2 seed. Colorado College earned the top seed via its head-to-head win over Southwestern earlier in the season.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College went 3-1 at the
SCAC East/West Crossover in Sherman, topping Oglethorpe and Centre
by scores of 3-0 and DePauw by a final of 3-1 before falling 3-1 to
No. 11-ranked Colorado College. The ‘Roos are now 22-6
overall on the year. Jessica Fleming had an excellent weekend for
Austin College, averaging 5.07 kills and 1.71 blocks per set with a
.488 hitting percentage in the four matches and Jordan Anderton
averaged 12.07 assists per set and added a .421 hitting percentage.
Jenna Wilson added 2.29 kills and 4.93 digs per set and Quinn McKee
averaged a team-best 5.64 digs per set for the weekend. Austin
College is home this weekend when they host the Austin College
Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Birmingham-Southern was not in action this week,
but returns home for the last time this season on Tuesday, Oct. 19,
hosting the BSC Tri-Match, featuring Martin Methodist College and
West Alabama.
No. 10 Colorado College clinched the top seed in the upcoming SCAC tournament by winning all four of its matches last weekend at the East-West crossover matches at Austin College. Senior middle blocker Emily Perkins hit .571 in the three-set win over DePauw, putting down eight kills on 14 attacks without an error. Junior setter Amy Schornack became the 13th player to record 100 service aces against DePauw and moved up to No. 12 after recording five during the 3-1 win over Austin. The Tigers reached the 20-win mark for the eighth consecutive season with a three-set victory against Sewanee in the final match of the day. Perkins hit .647 with 12 kills on 17 attacks with only one error against Oglethorpe, while Ballard added six kills on eight swings with just one error to finish with a .625 hitting percentage. Colorado College plays host the Molten Volleyball Spike It Up Classic next Friday and Saturday at Reid Gymnasium. The Tigers’ annual Dig Pink match is Friday at 7 p.m. against Occidental College, and the second annual Steve Durand Memorial Alumni Match takes place at 6 p.m. Saturday following the tournament championship.
DePauw is 16-11 overall and 8-4 in SCAC play
after winning two of its five matches last week. The Tigers opened
with a home win over Hanover by a 3-2 score. DePauw then lost to
11th-ranked Colorado College 3-0 and 20th-ranked Southwestern, 3-2
on Friday and Austin College by a 3-1 on Saturday before defeating
Oglethorpe 3-0. Annie Collier led the Tigers during the week with
2.75 kills/set and a .267 hitting percentage. Brianna Holder
averaged 9.8 assists, while Kylee Lehrman totaled 10 service aces.
Madison Hoenig averaged 4.6 digs and Kristen Chynoweth averaged 0.8
blocks.
Hendrix embarked on a west coast road trip to
participate in the Cal Lutheran University Fall Classic on Friday
and Saturday. The Warriors returned home on Sunday with an 0-4
record and an eight-game skid. Hendrix tipped off the weekend
with a 3-0 loss to Whittier College (Whittier, Calif.). Senior
outside hitter Becca Clancy led the Warriors with nine kills and 18
digs, while first year setter Zoe Calhoun dished out 30
assists. Hendrix also dropped a 3-0 affair to the host school
CLU on Friday. Senior middle blocker Leah Groat pounded six
kills and Calhoun made nine assists. The Warriors took on
Pomona-Pitzer College (Claremont, Calif.) on Saturday afternoon and
suffered a 3-0 set back. Clancy and Calhoun led the team once
again with 12 kills and 26 assists, respectively. Hendrix ended the
road trip against University of Redlands (Redlands, Calif.) and
suffered its eighth-consecutive 3-0 loss. Sophomore outside
hitter Katie Bates hammered 10 kills and Calhoun racked up 26
assists. Larson collected 23 digs and Clement made three block
assists. The Warriors drop to 9-21 overall.
Millsaps traveled over to Belhaven (Miss.) for a pair of games on Saturday. The Majors (16-10) first took on Xavier University of Louisiana, sweeping the Gold Nuggets in three. Heather Keenan set the bar for the Majors’ offense with nine kills for the match (.692 attack percentage). Maggie Tumminello led the defensive effort with nine digs. Kasey Laird led with two solo and two assisted blocks at the net. The second game featured the Majors and Blazers in a four set match with the Majors taking the victory. Kasey Laird led the attack with 14 kills with two aces and she also collected a game high 22 digs. The Majors will return to the Hangar Dome for their final home match of 2010 against Mississippi College at 7 p.m.
Oglethorpe was swept in four consecutive SCAC
matches this weekend in Sherman, Texas. The Petrels went down to
Austin, Trinity, Southwestern and DePauw in a slate of tough
contests. With the results Oglethorpe is now 7-17 on the season and
will host SCAC Divisional play this weekend in the Schmidt
Center.
Rhodes finished with an overall record of 3-2 at
their Fall Break Classic after defeating Lakeland College and
Greensboro College on the final day of the tournament. The Lynx
dropped their opening match to Loras College. Claire Warren and
Meagan Mansfield each had 10 kills on the night. Rhodes went 1-1
on day two. The team defeated Bethel College (Tenn.) in five
sets. In the team’s final match of the day, the Lynx fell in
three straight sets to Wisconsin Lutheran. Warren led the Lynx with
7 kills and 3 service aces. In the team's first match on Sunday,
the Lynx took a 2-0 lead against Lakeland. The Lynx found
themselves down 18-23 in set two before storming back to win the
set 25-23. The team dropped set number three before
turning the tables winning the fourth set in
convincing style.
Sewanee dropped four matches this weekend in the
SCAC East/West Crossover. The Tigers fell to #20 Southwestern in
three sets before falling to #11 Colorado College, 3-0 on Friday.
They also fell by 3-0 scores to Trinity and Centre on Saturday. The
Tigers drop to 1-25 overall and 0-11 in conference play. On Friday,
Liz Boddiford led the Tigers with eight kills in the loss to
Colorado. Erin Brahm picked up ten assists and two blocks. On
Saturday, Brahm paced the Tigers in their loss to Trinity, tallying
three kills and six assists. Boddiford added three kills and six
digs in the effort. Against Centre, Brahm recorded 13 assists, nine
digs, and a block. Freshman Tarver Shimek added five kills. The
Tigers travel to Piedmont College on Tuesday to take on the
Lions.
No. 21 Southwestern dominated at the second installment of the SCAC West/East Cross as they dropped just two games all weekend. The Pirates improve to 23-5 on the season and 14-1 in conference action and remain nationally ranked at #20. SU opened up the crossover against Sewanee and nearly kept the Tigers from reaching double digits as they won 3-0. DePauw was next up for Southwestern and these Tigers fought with the Pirates as the match when five games. On day two Southwestern picked up right where they left off as they easily handled Centre 3-0 before facing off with Trinity once again. SU won in three games. The Pirates have an off weekend from conference action as they head back to Sherman, Texas to face East Texas Baptist and the University of Dallas on Saturday.
Trinity went 3-1 at the second SCAC East-West Divisional of the season, snapping an 11-match win streak in the final contest of the weekend. Trinity swept Centre and Oglethorpe to open play on Friday, then took its win streak to 11 matches with a victory over Sewanee. In the weekend finale, though, Southwestern took a 3-0 win over the Tigers. Madison McMahon averaged nearly five kills/set for the weekend, hitting over .300 over the four matches. Caiti Troyer tallied over 100 assists in the four matches, while Meredith Erwin averaged more than four digs/set. This weekend, Trinity will play its final regular season home matches at the Trinity University National Invitational. The Tigers will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, New York, UW-Eau Claire, and 21st-ranked UT-Dallas.
