DANVILLE, Ky. - Following six successful seasons, Centre College director of athletics and recreation, Brian Chafin, has announced he will step down as the director of golf effective immediately to focus on broader issues within the athletics and recreation departments.
“Brian is responsible for the continued high regard with which the Centre golf program specifically and athletics in general is held at the national level,” says Dr. John Roush, president of Centre College. “As we continue to attract outstanding student-athletes and grow our programs, such as with the recent addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse, I need Brian fully devoted to his leadership role as athletics director. This change makes that possible.”
“We are very fortunate to have two high-quality golf coaches to carry on the fine tradition of outstanding men’s and women’s golf at Centre,” Chafin says.
Brown has a long history as one of the best teaching professionals in the state of Kentucky, and Tom Campbell carries a deep playing resume, as well as a strong background in the coaching profession.
“It was very evident that these two coaches were the ones to lead our golf program by the success the teams had during the regular season and in the NCAA Championships. They have my full support and confidence as they move forward,” Chafin says.
While at the helm, Chafin helped the Centre golf programs gain both regional and national recognition. The men and women have been nationally ranked in recent years and have qualified for national championships in each of the last two seasons.
In 2010, the men’s team earned the school’s first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament Championship, while the women placed second. The league’s head coaches named Chafin, Brown and Campbell the SCAC Men’s Golf Coaching-Staff-of-the-Year for their efforts.
This year, the Centre men and women finished seventh at the NCAA Division III National Championships, with senior Chris Morris of Maysville, Ky., winning the men’s individual national championship and junior Emily Bachert of Bowling Green, Ky., finishing second at the women’s championships.
The two programs will look for continued success next year as both teams return a strong core of letter-winners to go along with highly regarded recruiting classes.
