BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The top-seeded Sewanee Tigers won the 2011 SCAC Women's Lacrosse Championship today with a 14-11 victory over second seed Colorado College, hosted by Birmingham-Southern in Panther Stadium. Sewanee moves to 13-5, while CC drops to 13-2. Box Score
In an exciting game from the first whistle, Colorado College
scored the first goal of the game only 40 seconds in, followed by
six straight goals from Sewanee. CC came back and out-scored
Sewanee 3-1 in the last 12 minutes of the half to cut it to
7-4.
Colorado College scored first to open the second half to cut it to
7-5, and the teams traded goals before a CC goal at the 11:14 mark
cut the Sewanee lead to 9-8. Sewanee managed to stay just ahead,
though, going up by two, 11-9, and then three, 12-9, with 7:45 left
in the game.
Both teams scored twice in the last seven minutes, giving Sewanee
the three-point championship victory.
Molly Arnold led Sewanee with six goals, and Megan Velie had three
assists. Hanna Moran won four draw controls. For Colorado College,
Grace Maloney led with three goals and four draw controls, and Lara
Atkins had six ground balls.
Sewanee goalkeeper Amy Nusbaum made 10 saves; CC keeper Abby Fink
recorded nine.
