Men's Lacrosse Recap (Week 4) - Around The SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - SCAC play opened up the week of March 14-20 as all eight men's lacrosse teams began the journey to the inaugural SCAC men's lacrosse tournament next month at Colorado College. The tournament host Tigers and Birmingham-Southern Panthers opened up the conference slate undefeated.

AROUND THE SCAC

Birmingham-Southern went 2-1 this week, starting off with a 19-9 neutral-site loss to Plattsburgh State in Columbia, S.C., before returning home and getting two decisive conference wins over Millsaps (a 23-0 shutout) and Hendrix (a 25-10 victory). BSC stays at home this week for two games, taking on Fontbonne University, Thursday, and Oglethorpe on Saturday.
   
Centre competed in its first conference game of the season on Friday, March 18 when they took on Southwestern. The Pirates were able to beat the Colonels by a score of 12-10. Late in the game the Colonels tried to make a comeback when they were down 12-8, but the run came up short as they were only able to cut Southwestern’s lead in half. The Colonels made it a 12-10 game with 2:46 left on the clock and they had a few shot attempts, but they were unable to find the back of the cage. Both teams had 33 shots in the game and Centre had the 31-24 advantage in ground-balls. Centre went 15-27 in face-offs and they were 27-29 on clears. Next up for the Colonels will be a game against conference opponent Colorado College at home on Monday, March 21.  

Carson Christman struck for a pair of goals and set up two other scores as Colorado College used a balanced attack to post a 12-5 victory at Sewanee in the conference opener for both teams on Saturday. Charles Curtis and James Mauk recorded two goals and an assist, while Jack Kreitler and Moses Taylor each found the net twice. The Tigers grabbed a 4-0 lead when Kreitler notched his first marker with 5:04 remaining in the first period, but Sewanee to cut its deficit to one goal midway through the second period. Kreitler and Mauk gave CC a 6-4 advantage, only to see Sewanee score 56 seconds later to trim its deficit to 6-4 after 30 minutes. But that was as close as the hosts would get. Colorado College exploded for six consecutive goals in the second half and did not allow Sewanee to get on the scoreboard until it found the net in the closing seconds. Christman and Will Harris scored 11 seconds apart during the early stages of the third period and Taylor added his second score just over five minutes later. CC sealed the victory with three man-up goals in the fourth period. Zach Steedman made five saves while going the distance between the pipes. The Tigers visit Centre on Monday, and then bus to The College of Wooster in Northwest Ohio for the final stop on its three-game Spring Break Trip. 

Hendrix split two games during the week as the Warriors opened up the conference portion of their 2011 schedule. The Warriors earned the program’s first-ever conference win by beating Oglethorpe on the road, 11-5 before dropping a 25-10 decision at Birmingham-Southern. Hendrix’s Jeff Appleton scored two goals in the first two periods to help the Warriors jump out to a 5-0 lead over the Oglethorpe. Hendrix took a 6-2 lead into the half before earning the 11-5 win. Clayton Cersonsky tallied three goals and an assist in the win. Birmingham-Southern proved too much as the Panthers exploded for seven goals in the third to break open a 14-6 halftime advantage on the way to the 25-10 win. David Davis Jr. paced the Warrior offense by scoring four goals on six shots. Dan Fox added three goals and Ben Nelson chipped in with two goals in the loss. Hendrix returns to action on March 21 playing at Hanover (Ind.) before hosting Millsaps on Friday, March 25.

Millsaps continued to search for the program's first win this week, falling on the road to Birmingham-Southern and Oglethorpe. Friday's game at BSC was a lopsided affair, with the Panthers getting the shutout, 23-0. Sunday's meeting with Oglethorpe was much closer but still unsuccessful as the Majors fell 12-7 to the Petrels. Hunter Stevison had four of the Majors' seven against Oglethorpe, including two in the second quarter. The Majors will travel to Conway on Friday for a match with Hendrix before finally returning home for a noon meeting with Fontbonne University at Harper Davis Field.

Oglethorpe its first three matches on campus this past week, posting a 1-2 record. The Petrels were humbled 22-3 by a dominant Carthage College squad in their home opener on Wednesday but recovered to split a pair of SCAC matches over the weekend against Hendrix (L, 11-5) and Millsaps (W, 12-7). Against the Warriors on Friday, Hendrix struck three times in the first quarter and added two more tallies before Michael Kasmarik finally put the Petrels on the board with a goal with 8:30 to play in the second. Dustin Carnahan added the first of his team-high three tallies with 5:06 left in the half to make the score 6-2 at the break. On Sunday the Petrels notched their first SCAC win in school history by knocking off Millsaps, 12-7. The Majors jumped out to an early 2-1 lead but the Petrels rattled off three straight goals spanning into the second quarter to take command and go on to notch the historic victory. The Petrels are now 2-3 on the season and will travel to face Birmingham-Southern next Saturday.
  
Sewanee opened the conference portion of its schedule with a weekend split, falling 12-5 to Colorado College before topping Southwestern, 10-5. Against the Tigers, Sewanee fell behind early and could never recover, as the visitors walked away with the victory. Jack Thomasson notched two goals for the Tigers, while Will Grimes, Marty Johnson, and Reed Daniel each added one. Teddy Peterson finished the day 9 of 19 on face-offs. Spencer Graves tallied nine saves in taking the loss. Against the Pirates, freshman Davis Brown broke open for five goals as the Tigers took home their first conference victory of the season. Graves and Tommy Healy split time in goal, with Graves picking up three saves to Healy’s four. The Tigers held a 52-25 edge in shots and a 41-23 edge in groundballs over the Pirates. With the weekend split, the Tigers are now 2-5 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. Sewanee is back in action on Saturday when they play host to Ohio Wesleyan at 2 p.m.   

Southwestern opened up conference action this week after hosting nationally-ranked RPI at home on Tuesday. The Pirates went 1-2 this week to move to 4-6 on the season, 1-1 in the SCAC. RPI wasted no time getting on the board and scored off the first two faceoffs and then mounted a 14-0 lead before SU got on the board. Southwestern out-scored the Engineers in the fourth quarter but fell 18-3. SCAC play opened for the Pirates on Friday at Centre and in a close, thrilling match Southwestern pulled out the win. Edward Williams started the scoring off for Southwestern, assisted by Luther Faulk, just two minutes into the game. The Pirates never trailed the rest of the way. Centre attempted a comeback after Thomas Mock scored SU's 12th goal with just over 10 minutes to play, scoring two goals within a minute of each other to pull within two, 10-12, but Southwestern stopped the attack to earn the win. Sunday saw the Pirates face Sewanee on the Southwestern defense came ready to play, holding the Tigers to just three goals in the first half. A five goal third put Sewanee up by seven, 8-1, and the Pirates' comeback fell short as they dropped the contest 10-5. Southwestern has a much needed off week this week and returns to action on April 2nd to face Colorado College in Jackson, Miss.
