SUWANEE, Ga. - Birmingham-Southern extended its winning streak to four games with a 19-5 win over Fontbonne and a 20-2 win over league rival Oglethorpe. The Panthers improved to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Colorado College also remained undefeated by picking up two wins last week.
AROUND THE SCAC
Birmingham-Southern
picked up two more big wins this week at home, defeating Fontbonne
on Thursday, 19-5, and Oglethorpe on Saturday, 20-2. After going
1-4 to start the season, the Panthers have now won four straight
games, and have out-scored their opponents 87-17 in the last four
games, including a 23-0 shutout of Millsaps. Saturday's game was
the last home game for senior Ben Schaefer and junior Eli Burnham,
who will graduate this May. BSC is on the road for the remainder of
the season, including a neutral-site game this Saturday against
Greensboro College (NC) in Greenville, S.C.
Centre played in three home games over Spring
Break. The Colonels hosted conference opponent Colorado College on
Monday, March 21 and Centre fell 21-1. Centre then faced Berry on
Friday, March 25 and they lost 13-5. During the Colonels final game
of the week they took on Aurora, and although Centre played very
well they were unable to come away with the win, as they dropped
the game 11-4. The Colonels are 1-6 on the season and 0-2 in the
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Next up for the Colonels
will be a conference game against Sewanee on Saturday, April 2 at 2
p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
Colorado College remained
perfect in its season-opening five-game road stretch with victories
at Centre and The College of Wooster. Zach Steedman nearly pitched
a shutout as the Tigers defeated Centre, 21-1. The freshman goalie
steered aside five shots and didn’t allow a goal until the
Colonels scored with just 3:57 remaining in the game. Moses Taylor
scored three goals and tied his career highs with nine points and
six assists. Travis Voges and Carson Christman paced CC with four
goals apiece, while Steve Rijo also found the net three times.
Steedman made a season-high 13 saves to help Colorado College post
its third victory in six days with a 10-4 triumph at The College of
Wooster. Steedman got a great deal of support from the senior
defender Zach Hoisington and the Tiger defense, which held its
third consecutive opponent to five goals or less. Hoisington caused
three turnovers and grabbed three ground balls to help Steedman and
Colorado College lower its goals-against average 6.48. James Mauk
and Taylor paced the Tiger attack with three goals and an assist.
Charles Curtis struck for two scores and set up another, while
Christman recorded a game-high three assists. CC seized control of
the contest by scoring five consecutive goals midway through the
first half. The Tigers conclude their seven-game road swing against
Millsaps and Southwestern on Friday and Saturday, respectively, in
Jackson, Miss.
Hendrix junior Ben Nelson scored a season-high
five goals and five assists, while the Warriors held Millsaps
College scoreless in the first half to earn a 19-1 victory on
Friday afternoon at Warrior Field. Hendrix (4-4, 2-1 SCAC)
dominated from the start and never looked back as the Warriors took
a 9-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Sophomore David
Davis, Jr. led Hendrix with three goals in the first half, while
Nelson picked up three of his assists in the first two quarters.
Senior Clayton Cersonsky and junior Sam Brisson both sent two shots
past the keeper in the last 15 minutes to reach the final mark.
Millsaps lost a pair of games the week of March
21-27 to fall to 0-8 and 0-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference play. The Majors wound up on the wrong end of a 19-1
decision at Oglethorpe before falling 19-2 to Fontbonne in
non-conference action. Millsaps returns to action looking for the
program’s first-ever win on April 1 and 3 when the Majors
host Colorado College and Southwestern, respectively.
Oglethorpe lost its only game of the week at
Birmingham-Southern, 20-2. The Panthers immediately established
their dominance in this contest, scoring nine unanswered goals in
the first quarter to remove any doubt. BSC led 12-0 at halftime and
held a 14-0 advantage before Oglethorpe finally cracked the
scoreboard with a Garret LeBlanc assisted strike from Maseo Brown
with a minute remaining in the third. Brown added an unassisted
goal in the fourth to account for all of the Petrel scoring on the
afternoon. The Panthers held distinct advantages in the major
statistical categories, including outshooting the Petrels 73-19,
winning 26 more ground ball opportunities and forcing the Petrels
into 46 turnovers versus only 35 for the Panthers. At 2-4 on the
season, Oglethorpe is back in action at home on Salamone Field
versus Sewanee on April 1 at 3:30 p.m.
Sewanee dropped its only decision of the week,
falling 18-8 to visiting Ohio Wesleyan. After an hour and a half
lightning delay, the Battling Bishops found the net early and
often, taking a 10-1 lead into halftime. The Tigers used a
five-goal outburst late in the second half to close the game on the
Bishops, but eventually fell 18-8. Carson Pfiefer, Jack Thomasson,
and Davis Brown each chipped in two goals for Sewanee, while
Spencer Graves and Brown each grabbed three ground balls. Sewanee
falls to 2-6 overall and sits at 1-1 in the SCAC. The Tigers will
take on the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe on April 1 at 3:30 p.m.

Southwestern had a much needed off week from action and remain at 4-6 on the season, 1-1 in the SCAC. They return to action this weekend, facing Colorado College in a neutral-site contest (Jackson, Miss.) on Saturday before taking on the Majors at Millsaps on Sunday.
