SCAC Names Owen and Lazar Golf Coaches-Of-The-Year

SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), Jim Owen and Vince Lazar were named men’s and women’s golf Coaches-of-the-Year.

Jim Owen
of Oglethorpe University was honored as men's Coach-of-the-Year for the 11th time in 13 years. The Petrels won their league-high ninth SCAC men's golf title at this year's conference tournament at Horseshoe Bay, Texas, and went on to 2011 NCAA Division III Championships where the Petrels finished in the top 13 nationally for the 11th straight year. With his 11 men's golf COTY awards, Owen is a part of an exclusive list of SCAC coaches (Paul McGinlay, Trinity - men's soccer and Steve Mohr, Trinity - football) who have won 10 or more COTY honors in the same sport.

Like Owen, Vince Lazar of DePauw University guided his squad to a conference title and was rewarded with his seventh SCAC women’s Coach-of-the-Year honor. The conference title was DePauw's seventh in 13 years of SCAC competition. DePauw also captured the conference's automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III Championships, the eighth straight year the Tigers have competed in the tournament and the seventh time they have finished in the top 10 nationally. Lazar was also named the 1999 SCAC Co-Coach-of-the-Year in men’s golf.
