AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College improved to 2-0 on the year with a 20-14 victory over Texas Lutheran last weekend, marking their first victory over the Bulldogs since 2003. On their first drive of the game the ‘Roos marched 74 yards in seven plays, culminating in a one yard Brogan Funderburg touchdown run to go ahead 7-0 but did not score again in the half despite dominating total yardage and time of possession. In the third quarter Matt Finke picked off two passes in as many possessions with both interceptions setting up Austin College touchdowns as the ‘Roos went ahead 20-0. Finke’s first interception set up a 15 yard scoring pass from Travis Zambiasi to Greg Harrell, and on the next defensive possession Finke picked off a pass and raced 68 yards before being shoved out at the one yard line, where Funderburg plowed in for his second score of the game. TLU came fighting back with two late touchdowns but Ethan Tanner’s sack with under a minute remaining sealed the game for Austin College. Funderburg carried 16 times for 73 yards, Zambiasi completed 11-of-17 passes for 115 yards and a score and Harrell had six catches for 47 yards to lead the ‘Roos offensively. Tanner had eight tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and Finke added five tackles to his to interceptions in the win. The ‘Roos open up SCAC play this weekend as they travel to Jackson, Miss. to take on Millsaps.
Leading only 6-0 after one half of play, Centre scored 22 points in the third quarter and seven more in the fourth, while the defense posted its fourth shutout in the last five years to defeat Maryville College 35-0 Saturday, Sept. 11 in Maryville, Tenn. The Colonels, which blanked Sewanee: University of the South in both 2006 and 2009 and Rhodes College in 2008, improve to 1-1 in the early going, while Maryville, which has yet to score a touchdown in 2010, falls to 0-2. Centre will return home to host DePauw in the first SCAC game for both teams Saturday, Sept. 18 in Danville, Ky.
Millsaps dropped their second straight this week on the road at LaGrange College, 27-21 in overtime. Ellis Thompson gave the Majors a huge opportunity to put the game away with just over five minutes to play in regulation after recovering a Panther fumble at midfield. Unfortunately, after driving down all the way to the LaGrange 14 yard line Julious Allen fumbled at the one yard line to give the Panthers the ball back with just 1:36 remaining in regulation. Turnovers continued haunt the Majors as the final minute ticked away. After forcing a LaGrange punt with 37 seconds remaining, Joplin went for the long ball to try and put the Majors back on top but was intercepted at the 28 yard line by Chris Prewett. The Majors then went four-and-out on the first possession of overtime and the Major defense couldn't match the performance of the home team, who scored the game winning touchdown on the second series from the 25. The Majors will return to Harper Davis Field next Saturday, September 18 as they host Austin College for both teams' SCAC openers. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Jackson.
Sewanee fell to visiting Washington and Lee by a score of 48-17 on Saturday. The Tigers struggled to find any rhythm on a day when they gave up 543 yards of total offense. The Generals of W&L found the end zone early and often, scoring twice in the first quarter on 8- and 10-yard runs and once early in the second on a Charlie Westfal 10-yard touchdown, before the Tigers tacked on any points. The Tigers made it 20-3 on a 31-yard field goal by Trey Knighton with two minutes left in the half. The Generals scored twice in the third before the Tigers were able to score a touchdown, finally coming up with TD score late in the third on a 30-yard pass from Curtis Johnson to Chalankis Brown. W&L added a Russell Stewart 4-yard run to make it 41-10 heading into the fourth. Sewanee finally found a bright spot on offense halfway through the fourth when quarterback Lee Schurlknight broke free for a 47-yard touchdown score.
