DePauw & Sewanee Women's Tennis Teams Post NCAA Second Round Wins

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - DePauw, ranked 17th in the nation, advanced to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship third round with a 5-1 win over 30th-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) College. Elsewhere in the second round, 18th-ranked Sewanee: University of the South upset 13th-ranked Washington (Mo.) University 5-0. Official Site

DePauw, ranked 17th in Division III, advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships following a 5-1 win over 30th-ranked  Wheaton (Ill.) College. The Tigers improved to 14-9 and advanced to Saturday's Noon third-round match where they'll face the winner of the Denison-Albion match. The Thunder finished their season at 21-3.

DePauw swept the doubles play to take a 3-0 lead as the number-three team of Tricia Wilks and Lizzy Whitlatch topped Sarah Ray and Kirsten Boyer by an 8-4 score. The Tigers' number-one tandem of Janelle Arita and Kelly Gebert made it 2-0 with an 8-3 victory over Elizabeth Worsowicz and Sara Federschmidt before Elizabeth Young and Meg Crowley completed the sweep at second doubles with an 8-3 win over Lindsey Hallett and Marissa Shults.

The Tigers extended the lead to 4-0 as Katie Regan defeated Shults by a 6-3, 6-2 score at number-six singles. Wheaton made it 4-1 as Boyer defeated Young 6-3, 7-5 at number-five, but Arita closed out the match with a 6-4 6-2 win at the number-one slot over Worsowicz.

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Playing on their home court and for the second day in a row, the Sewanee #3 doubles team of LindsayWilburn and Laura Szyperksi earned the first point for the Tiger team. The twosome picked up an 8-4 win over Washington's Paige Madara and Connie Rauck, while the #1 doubles team of Kate Stanford and Jenny Liles battled to an 8-6 win over Washington's Natalie Tingir and Evelyn Qin. The #2 doubles team of Michelle Flume and Anne Garland were the final duo on the courts. The twosome found themselves locked in a dogfight with the Bears' pairing of Theresa Petraskova and Elise Sambol that dragged on into a second hour of play. The Bears jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the set before Garland and Flume clawed their way back to take a 7-6 lead. The two teams were eventually forced into a tiebreaker and the Tigers eventually won the point, earning a 9-8 (7-4) victory over the visitors.

With the momentum and the crowd pushing them into singles play, the Tigers put the #1-#3 players on the court with the hopes of determining the match. Stanford squared off with Tingir at #1 singles, while Liles faced Qin at the #2 spot and Flume took on Kate Klein at #3 singles.

Liles was the first off the court after grabbing a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Qin, giving the Tigers a 4-0 edge. Stanford ended up being the clincher for Sewanee after she pulled off a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Tingir. With Liles' and Stanford's singles wins, the Tigers earned a 5-0 victory and advanced to the third round of tournament play.

Sewanee improves to 21-6 on the year, while Washington closes out the season with a 16-6 overall record. The Tigers will now face the winner of the Agnes Scott/Emory contest at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in third round action. The winner of that match will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals to be held in Claremont, California.
