AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College (4-3 overall, 2-2 SCAC) had the weekend off. The Kangaroos return to action on Saturday, November 6 when they travel to Greencastle, Ind. to square off against DePauw for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff. Last year, DePauw earned a 34-23 win over the visiting Kangaroos. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime before the Tigers outscored Austin College 20-9 for the win. Ross Hasten rushed for 53 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns. Hasten also added a receiving touchdown to pace the Kangaroo offense. Austin College will look for its first–ever win against DePauw.

Birmingham-Southern traveled to face No. 24 DePauw this week, threatening to ruin the Tigers’ perfect season but ultimately losing 30-23. Senior tailback Walter Arrington, the SCAC’s leading rusher at 116 yards per game, finished the afternoon with 141 yards on 18 carries to lead the BSC offensive effort. The Panthers finished with 255 yards total offense and 13 first downs against the league’s top defensive unit. BSC was led defensively by junior linebacker Dustin Massey, who tallied 12 total tackles, including two for loss of yards and one pass break up. Junior defensive back Andrew Shannon and sophomore defensive back Cole Rudder each recorded interceptions in the game. The Panthers stay on the road this weekend, traveling to Memphis to face Rhodes on Saturday at 1 p.m.

For the first time since 2008, Centre dropped back to back games in the same season, falling 38-31 to Rhodes. It was the first loss on the road this year for the Colonels and the first loss to Rhodes since a 20-10 defeat in Memphis in 2006. The game marked the third time Centre has recorded 400+ yards in total offense, including a season-high 322 yards passing. It is also the first time the Colonels have won the time of possession battle, but lost the game. Centre, now 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the SCAC, will return home to host Trinity Saturday, Nov. 6 at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.

No. 22 DePauw improved to 8-0 for the first time in school history with a 30-23 win over visiting Birmingham-Southern. The Tigers' defense limited the Panthers to season lows in points and total offense in the win. DePauw closed the gap to 7-5 as the Tigers' Robby Schuler blocked Kyle Sebestyen's punt and Sebestyen pounced on it in the end zone for a safety. On the second play of the ensuing free kick, Michael Engle tossed a 68-yard scoring pass to All-America receiver Alex Koors giving DePauw a 12-7 lead with 2:18 left in the first. Jon Ellis' 15-yard run and Malm's career-long 47-yard field goal pushed DePauw's lead to 22-10 at the intermission. Chase Childers' 2-yard run on the Panthers' first series of the second half closed the gap to 22-16 before the Tigers expanded the lead to 30-16 on Ellis' 2-yard run with 2:57 remaining in the third and Engle's 2-point conversion pass to Brody Schoen. Walter Arrington's 9-yard run with 4:51 left in the contest closed the margin to 30-23, but the Tigers were able to run out the clock on offense. DePauw outgained Birmingham-Southern 378-255, and held a 316-76 edge through the air. Ellis rushed for 73 yards on 16 tries and two scores. Engle completed 26-of-41 for 316 yards with Koors catching eight for 148 yards. Koors has caught at least one touchdown pass in every game this season and has caught at least one pass in all 37 games in which he's played. Jonathan Lambert paced the DePauw defense with eight tackles, while Ryan Preuss and Kyle Sherer each had seven. DePauw, which has clinched at least a share of its fourth SCAC title, can win its first outright football title with a win over Austin College on Saturday.

Millsaps
wrapped up its home and conference schedules this week with a 30-0 shutout of the Sewanee Tigers. The Majors (6-3, 5-1 SCAC) mixed things up early on. In a role reversal, Jason O’Rear took the draw and passed the ball into the outstretched hands of the quarterback, Garret Pinciotti, for the Majors’ first six points of the day on a 18-yard route. The Majors’ second scoring drive went 11 plays for 85 yards, capped by a successful 21-yard field goal attempt from Taylor Russolino to put Millsaps up 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. Shane Bowser scored the other two Major touchdowns in the second quarter. The first was a quick one-yard route capping a nine-play drive to put the Majors up 17-0. The second came off a 46-yard run with just 1:14 remaining in the half to put the Majors firmly in control, 24-0, before the end of the half. Bowser would end the day leading all Majors with 116 yards on the ground in 14 carries. Russolino tacked on two more field goals in the fourth quarter to round out scoring on the day. The Major defense limited Sewanee to just 144 offensive yards on the day. Millsaps will be off next week as they prepare to close out the 2010 season on the road with a non-conference matchup with the Birmingham-Southern Panthers on November 13.

Rhodes rallied from a 14-3 2nd quarter deficit to upend Centre College 38-31 before a homecoming crowd of 2500 at Fargason Field, on Saturday. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Perkins threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Lynx comeback. Perkins also rushed for 36 yards and one touchdown to account for 332 yards of total offense. The Lynx defense came up big with two turnovers. Senior defensive back Pete Bilan intercepted a Tyler Osterman pass on the last play of the first half at the Lynx 10 yard-line, as Rhodes took a 17-14 lead into intermission. Senior linebacker Andrew Meier had a big fumble recovery in the third quarter that setup a Lynx touchdown. Two plays after Meier recovered a fumble at the Colonels 38 yard-line, Perkins connected with senior tight end Kyle Pipkin for a 35 yard touchdown pass that gave Rhodes a 31-21 lead with 4:02 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Centre cut the lead to 31-28 before Rhodes responded with a  three yard touchdown run  by running back Matt Gilbert, to give the Lynx a 38-28 lead with 9:40 to play. Gilbert rushed 17 times for 62 yards. Rhodes improves to 3-5 on the season.

Sewanee fell behind early on Saturday and the Millsaps Majors never looked back on their way to a 30-0 win. The Majors went ahead early in the first half after a reverse set up Jason O’Rear to throw a touchdown pass to Majors’ quarterback Garrett Pinciotti. Millsaps followed that up with a 21-yard field goal from Taylor Russolino. Shane Bowser made a turnover count with a one-yard touchdown run to make it 17-0. Millsaps got another touchdown from Bowser as he galloped in from 46 yards out to give the Majors a 24-0 lead heading into halftime. Millsaps got two field goals from Russolino in the second half, a 29-yarder and a 35-yarder, to make the final score 30-0. Zac Atkins paced the Tiger defense with ten tackles on the afternoon. Alfonza Knight added eight and Curtis Tucker came up with six tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. Sewanee falls to 1-8 on the season and 0-6 in SCAC play. Sewanee now has a week off before hosting Rhodes on November 13.

Trinity finished off its non-conference schedule with a tough 56-30 loss at Huntingdon on Saturday afternoon. Trinity lost for the first time in three meetings against Huntingdon, giving up 56 points for the second time since 2008 (Millsaps). The Tigers have lost five games this season, which is the most since the 1992 team that finished the year 2-8 overall. After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, Trinity rallied with a 24-point second quarter, but a late touchdown from Huntingdon gave the home team a 35-24 lead at halftime.
