SEWANEE, Tenn. - The 18th-ranked Sewanee
women's tennis team opened up NCAA Tournament play Thursday morning
and grabbed a 6-0 victory over visiting Rose-Hulman to advance to
the second round of action.
Appearing in their 19th NCAA Tournament overall and first since
2007, the Tigers squared off with the Fightin' Engineers of
Rose-Hulman at the sun-soaked Bruton-Guerry Tennis Complex and
swept all three doubles slots before winning three singles matches
to clinch the win.
Sewanee's #3 doubles team of Laura Szyperski and Lindsay Wilburn were the first Tigers to earn a point on the day after they blanked Rose-Hulman's Klara Schroederus and Lauren Reberger, 8-0. The Tiger duo of Kate Stanford and Jenny Liles grabbed an 8-1 win at #1 doubles over the Engineer pair of Megan Chann and Marie Stettler, while Michelle Flume and Anne Garland were 8-4 winners over Paige Cook and Melissa Montgomery at #2 doubles.
In singles play, Liles blanked Stettler, 6-0, 6-0, at the #2
spot, while Tiger Julia Wood earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Colleen
Stevenson at #5 singles. Garland picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over
Rose-Hulman's Cook in the #4 slot to clinch the team win.
Sewanee led the remaining three matches before the match was
called. Stanford held a 6-0, 5-1 lead over Chann at #1 singles,
Flume led Montgomery, 6-1, 4-0, at #3 singles, while Wilburn held a
6-1, 1-0 edge over Schroederus at #6 singles.
Sewanee improves its overall record to 20-6, while the Engineers close out the year with a 14-5 record. The Tigers will now move on to face the Bears of Washington University in St. Louis on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in second round play at Sewanee. Emory University will face the winner of today's second game (Principia versus Agnes Scott) at 2:00 p.m. Friday.
