Men's Soccer Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Southwestern improved to 4-0 in SCAC play for the first time since 2003 after home victories over Austin and Colorado College this past weekend. Junior forward Ryan Staten led the way for the Pirates with three goals on the weekend.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College fell twice over the weekend, losing 3-1 to Southwestern before falling 10-0 to Trinity. Against Southwestern, Chris Melton scored on a feed from Sam Temple to send the teams into the break knotted at 1-1, but the Pirates tallied twice to hand the ‘Roos the loss. Grant Gosselin had seven saves in the match. Against the Tigers, the ’Roos were out-shot 34-3 in the game and Trinity scored seven times in the second half to hand the ’Roos their fifth loss of the year. Austin College is now 4-5-3 overall and will host DePauw on Friday and then Centre on Sunday for Komen Game IV.

Birmingham-Southern
was not in action this week but returns to the pitch this weekend on the road, facing Southwestern, Friday, and No. 7 Trinity, Sunday.

Centre
had another perfect weekend, winning both SCAC Home games this weekend. On Friday night, Centre took on Hendrix College, falling behind early before rebounding for a 3-1 win. Then, on Sunday, Centre fought hard and grinded out a 1-0 win over Rhodes College. It was the Colonels seventh shutout on the year and fourth shutout in five games. Centre travels west this weekend to take on Colorado College on Friday night, and Austin College on Sunday. The Austin College game marks the Komen Game IV, in which Austin and Centre battle to see who can raise the most money on behalf of the Susan G Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Colorado
College suffered back-to-back losses for the second time this season with losses at Trinity (6-0) and Southwestern (4-1). The six goals allowed against TU were the most since a 6-0 loss against Pacific Lutheran on Sept. 8, 2006. Senior goalkeeper Andy McGhie had six of his career-high 11 saves during the first half when Trinity outshot CC 17-0. Colorado College mustered only two shots, both by freshman forward Sean Parham during the second half. The two shots equaled the fewest taken by CC in a game since a 2-0 loss to Trinity on Oct. 12, 2007. Parham scored for the third time in four games, but Southwestern struck for a pair of goals during the first five minutes, including one just 28 seconds into the contest, during Sunday’s loss. Parham broke up the shutout 8:41 into the second half when he converted off a pass from Matt Fechter that glanced off a Southwestern defender. It was his fifth point in the last six contests. McGhie had three of his four saves during the second half to give CC a chance at a comeback. Colorado College returns to action on Friday when the Tigers play host to Centre College under the lights on Washburn Field. CC concludes the weekend on Sunday against DePauw University.

20th-ranked DePauw
imrproved to 11-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in SCAC play following Friday's 3-0 win over Rhodes and Sunday's 1-0 victory over Hendrix. In the win over Rhodes, the Tigers scored three times in the final 32 minutes for the win. Ryan Keefe got the scoring started as he delivered a penalty kick at 58:05. Dean Weaver made it 2-0 on George Elliott's assist at 80:31 before Sam Meyer closed out the scoring at 83:37 with another Elliott assist. DePauw held a 9-7 edge in shots and a 5-2 margin in corners. DePauw's Nate Sprenkel recorded two saves and shared the Tigers' ninth shutout with Tony Halterman. Ben Hazen's goal early in the second half on a double assist from Meyer and Kreigh Kamman lifted DePauw to the win over Hendrix. After a scoreless first half, the Tigers scored the eventual game-winner just 4:31 into the second half. DePauw held a 9-8 edge in shots and  a 7-2 margin in corners. Sprenkel totaled two saves in posting the Tigers' 10th shutout of the season.  Adam Legg had three saves for Hendrix.

Hendrix
dropped a pair of SCAC games on the road this weekend.  The Warriors suffered a 3-1 defeat at Centre College on Friday night and then fell to No. 20 DePauw University, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.  Hendrix now stands at 4-6 overall and slides to 0-5 in SCAC play.  Centre scored three unanswered goals to pick up a come-from-behind win on Friday evening.  The Colonels scored all three of their goals within five minutes of action.  Sophomore forward Connor Silvestri put the Warriors on top in the 36th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Colin Thompson.  Silvestri’s 20th career goal placed him at the top of Hendrix’s all-time list.  He passed Gregg Webb (1998-2001) on the Warriors’ career goals list.  Colonel’s first year midfielder George Laventis sent a ball off his left foot and into the back of the net in the 43rd minute to knot the game just before the break.  Centre would then benefit from an Own Goal in the 47th minute to go ahead, 2-1, before sophomore forward Ryan Garvey put the game out of reach in the 51st minute on a cross from sophomore forward Josh Settle.  Hendrix junior keeper Adam Legg made a couple point-blank saves to keep the Warriors within reach and finished with nine saves on the night.  Centre outshot Hendrix 22-17 and owned a 12-6 advantage on-goal.  The Colonels doubled the Warriors’ corner attempts with 10 chances.  No. 20 DePauw would need just one score to earn an evenly matched contest on Sunday afternoon at Boswell Field.  The Tigers netted an early second-half goal off a double-assist for the win.  Hendrix is on a three-game losing streak and falls to 4-6 overall and 0-5 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.  DePauw is unbeaten through its last seven games and improves to 11-1-1 on the year and 5-0 in league play.  DePauw junior forward Sam Meyer and junior midfielder Kreigh Kamman combined to find first year midfielder Ben Hazen for the game-winner in the 49th minute.  Both teams managed just one shot on-goal in the opening half and Hendrix earned a 6-4 advantage in shots during the second half.  DePauw earned a 7-2 mark on corner kicks.

Millsaps
got a home win over Huntingdon College before dropping a pair of games in Texas over the weekend. The Majors overwhelmed the Hawks on Wednesday with six goals in the shutout. Andrew Moise and Johannes Schlotmann each had a pair of goals while Trey Fontaine and Brandon Guichard added single goals of their own. Unfortunately, the Millsaps offense couldn’t keep production up over the weekend. They fell 1-2 at Dallas Christian on Saturday before being shutout themselves by the University of Dallas, 1-0, on Sunday. The Majors will return to Texas this weekend for a pair of SCAC matches with Trinity on Friday and Southwestern on Sunday.

Oglethorpe
lost at Sewanee on Saturday afternoon, 1-0. Sewanee managed just one shot on goal for the contest but it went through off a free kick to lift them to the win. The loss was tough to swallow for Oglethorpe as the Petrels could not convert a penalty kick and struck the post on three separate occasions but could not muster a goal. With the result Oglethorpe is now 5-4-1 on the season and will face Emory in Decatur on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

Rhodes
dropped both SCAC matches this weekend.  Rhodes traveled to DePauw University on Friday evening.  Despite playing a very good game, the Lynx were unable to crack the Tiger defense.  An unfortunate penalty kick halfway through the 2nd half lead to DePauw’s first goal.  After pushing numbers forward, DePauw was able to tack on 2 more goals to secure the win.  Rhodes then traveled to Centre College on Sunday afternoon.  The game was back and forth; however, Centre was able to capitalize on a breakaway halfway through the first half to put Centre up 1-0.  Both defenses would stand tough the rest of the game, and the game would end 1-0 in Centre’s favor.

Sewanee
sophomore Thomas Moore placed a shot over a wall of defenders and into the net with just 3:45 left in the game, giving the Tiger men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Oglethorpe. Moore’s late heroics were all the Tigers would need to put the Stormy Petrels away and move to 3-6-2 overall and 1-2-2 in SCAC play. Despite a dominating Oglethorpe offensive attack throughout much of the game, Sewanee’s defense held strong all day long. The Stormy Petrel defense stifled the Tigers in the first period, not allowing Sewanee to take a single shot in the entire half. But the Sewanee defense pushed back, and despite taking seven shots in the first half, Oglethorpe was held scoreless as well. The Stormy Petrels were able to create some close calls throughout the period, including a screaming shot by Oglethorpe’s Nick Williamson that ricocheted off the post. Sewanee goalkeeper Freddie Delchamps came up with a huge stop for the Tigers when he got his hands on an Oglethorpe penalty kick. Harrison McConnell took the shot for Stormy Petrels at the 58:17 mark, but Delchamps came through and kept it tied at zero. But despite being out shot 5-4 in the second half, the Tigers made it count when it mattered most. After an Oglethorpe foul at the 86:15 mark, Moore squared up to take a shot at Stormy Petrel goalkeeper Jon Beaver. A wall of Stormy Petrels lined up between Moore and the goal, but Moore sent a rocket past all of them and Beaver’s outstretched hands and into the bottom corner of the net, putting the Tigers up 1-0. Oglethorpe held the advantage in shots, twelve to four, and also in corner kicks, four to one. Delchamps came up with four saves in ninety minutes of play. The Tigers will return to action on Wednesday when they host Maryville College at 7:00 p.m.

Southwestern kept their perfect SCAC record in tact with wins over Austin College and Colorado College this weekend. SU scored early in both contest, needing just six minutes on Friday and 30-seconds on Sunday to take a 1-0 lead. A well-organized and consistent attack is working well for the Pirates as they spread the ball and goals around. Southwestern looks to remain undefeated this weekend as they host Birmingham Southern on Friday and Millsaps on Sunday.

No. 7 Trinity opened its first home SCAC weekend in style by posing shutout wins over both Austin College and Colorado College. Trinity started things off with a 6-0 win over Colorado College on Friday, handing the visiting Tigers their first SCAC loss of the season.  Trinity then wrapped up the weekend with a 10-0 win over Austin College, highlighted by Peter Philpott’s second-half hat trick – the third time this season that a Tiger player has scored three goals in a game. This weekend, Trinity remains at home to continue defense of last year’s SCAC title, facing off against Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.  The last time Trinity faced these two teams in San Antonio, the Tigers scored seven goals in both games to score a pair of victories.  Last season, Trinity tied Birmingham-Southern 1-1 on the road,  then needed double-overtime to escape with a 3-2 win at Millsaps.
