SUWANEE, Ga. - Centre and DePauw remain the only two undefeated teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference through the second week of the season. The Colonels extended their winning streak to four games while the Tigers extended their streak to five straight wins.

Centre opened their home schedule this past weekend with 1-0 wins over both Ohio Wesleyan University and Denison University to move to 4-0. These wins give Centre a sweep over their NCAC in region opponents this year. Centre outshot OWU 33-7 and Denison 29-4, but had trouble breaking through packed in defenses and stellar goal tending. Centre received goals from Louisville freshmen Courtney Kuiper (3 goals, 1 assist on the year) and Chelsea Klein (1 goal, 2 assists on the year) while receiving superior defensive play from Sydney White (Louisville, Ky.) and the remainder of the Colonel backfield. With the wins, Centre ties its 2008 record of four consecutive shutout victories. Head Coach Tom Hobbs: “Our defensive effort thus far has been very good all over the pitch. We know that we must play as a group at all times and so far we’ve had success. Now the real season begins.” Centre opens up SCAC play by hosting Hendrix College on Friday, Sept. 17, and defending SCAC Champion Rhodes College on Sunday, Sept. 19.
DePauw improved to 5-0 with two more shutouts
as it blanked Transylvania, 7-0, and Wooster, 1-0. The Tigers' 5-0
start is its best since 1999 and the five shutouts to start the
season marks the first time DePauw has accomplished the feat.
DePauw outshot Transylvania 36-1 in Saturday's win and six
different players as Addie McDonnell had two and five others one
each. In the win over Wooster, Margaret Ellis scored the game
winner midway through the second half.
Hendrix squared off against Lindenwood University on
Saturday afternoon in a rematch of the season opener. The
Warriors dropped another game to the Wildcats, 2-1, on a hot and
steamy afternoon at Warrior Field. Heavy rain in the morning
hours followed by temperatures over 90 degrees made it a sticky
contest, which took a lot of energy from both teams.
Lindenwood managed the heat and earned a 14-7 shot advantage to
control the tempo of the game. The Wildcats reached the
scoreboard first in the 24th minute on a penalty corner when junior
forward Haley McCulloch found the back of the goal off a
rebound. Lindenwood took its 1-0 advantage into the
break. The Wildcats scored their final goal in the 47th
minute on another penalty corner when senior forward Lauren
Cato’s cross was deflected into the net. Hendrix made
it a one-goal affair eight minutes later on senior defender Heather
Newell’s first goal of the season. Newell took a pass
from sophomore midfielder Maggie DesPain after a penalty
corner. Both goalkeepers had solid games in front of the
net. Warriors’ senior keeper Alyssa Hansen denied seven
shots and Wildcats’ first year keeper Julianne Sutton made
four saves on the day.
Rhodes won a pair of in region matches this weekend at
Centre to push to 3-1 on the season. The Lynx beat Denison
2-1 on Saturday in dramatic fashion with junior Chelsea McLeod
scoring the game winning goal with just .6 second to play in the
game. On Sunday Rhodes shut out Kenyon and picked up the win
on junior Sarah Kennedy's penalty corner score on a ball from
senior Charlie Wagner. Sara Sanders, Marie Mason, and Charlie
Wagner controlled play in the middle of the field and helped to
generate much of the Lynx offense. Rhodes controlled
possession for the majority of both games and out shot Denison 19-7
and Kenyon 21-9. Rhodes also benefitted from strong play in
goal by sophomore Jordan Robinson and senior Sarah Dockery.
The Lynx head back to Kentucky next weekend for noon matches at
Transylvania on Saturday and Centre on Sunday.
Sewanee lost two matches over the weekend, dropping their
record to 1-3 overall. The Tigers fell to Kenyon on Saturday by a
score of 3-1 and to Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday, 2-1. In the
Tigers’ opening game of the weekend, Kenyon scored two
unanswered goals before Sewanee could get on the board.
Sewanee’s Anne Booke was able to find the net at the five
minute mark of the first half, off an assist by Taylor Skeen, to
pull to 2-1 at the half, but it wouldn’t be enough, as Kenyon
came out on top, 3-1. In the Tiger’s second game of the
weekend, Carly Grimm scored an unassisted goal in the tenth minute
to start things off against Ohio Wesleyan, but the team
wasn’t able to find the net for the rest of the day, falling
2-1 to the Battling Bishops. The Tigers will be back in action next
weekend when they host visiting DePauw University on Saturday at
noon.
