SUWANEE, Ga. - Centre College, Millsaps College and Trinity University all won three or more games last week as the three teams went a combined 10-2 on the week. Hendrix College and Rhodes College each picked up two wins on the week as well.

Austin College took a 7-6 win
at East Texas Baptist before dropping a pair of games to Millsaps
over the weekend, falling 2-1 in game one and 9-3 in game two. In
game one the Roos scored in the 7th to tie the game at 1-1 on a
Scooter Merritt base hit, but Millsaps countered in the bottom half
of the inning to give the Majors the win. Tyler Steed continued his
strong start to 2011, pitching a complete game and giving up just
one earned run while scattering five hits and Merritt finished
2-for-4. In game two the Roos fell behind 3-1 early before cutting
the margin in half, but a four run 6th put the game out of reach as
the Majors took the 9-3 win. Brian Buehler and John Schulmeister
each had two hits in defeat.
Birmingham-Southern (No. 9 – ABCA) split at
home this week, defeating North Park University, 5-2, to extend its
win streak to nine games, but then falling to Berry College, 5-4.
Both games were played on Sunday due to a weather-adjusted
schedule. BSC now stands at 12-2 on the season. The Panthers play
at home three times this week, facing Emory & Henry College
Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Wednesday at 4 p.m., and Hampden-Sydney
College Thursday at 3 p.m.
Centre went 3-1 on the week splitting a
doubleheader with Spalding and then sweeping a doubleheader against
Calvin. The Colonels fell 3-2 in 10 innings in game one against
visiting Spalding before bouncing back for a 9-0 shutout victory in
game two. Centre then earned a 4-2 win and a 4-1 win over Calvin
Friday before the rain came and cancelled the third game of the
series. The Colonels’ pitching and defense was outstanding on
the week as the pitching staff allowed only six runs in 31.0
innings (1.74 ERA) while walking 11 and striking out 36.
Defensively, Centre committed only two errors in 119 chances (.983
FLD%). The Colonels will host Transylvania in a doubleheader
Tuesday, play their first road game Friday at Maryville and then
host Hanover in a doubleheader Saturday.
DePauw posted a 1-2 record for the week following a 7-3 loss to Mount St. Joseph in a game played at Marge Schott Stadium at the University of Cincinnati and a doubleheader split with Manchester (5-1, 5-6). In the Mount St. Joseph game, the Tigers outhit the Lions,7-6, but DePauw pitchers walked seven. The Tigers held a 2-1 lead before Mount St. Joseph scored two in the third and four in the sixth. Jason Cohen and Zach Galyean each had two of the Tigers' seven hits. DePauw scored three in the top of the first of game one against Manchester and it held up for the win. The Tigers totaled 11 hits led by Ben Gardner, Sam Swafford and Alex Berlyn with two each. Hobs Donovan improved to 1-1 after striking out seven and not allowing a walk in six innings. In the nightcap, Manchester scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth for the win after DePauw took a 5-4 advantage in the seventh. DePauw totaled 13 hits led by Cohen with three and Gardner and Swafford with two each. Cohen hit .462 for the week to lead the Tigers, while Donovan posted a 1.50 ERA in his lone game.
Millsaps got three wins this week, including a two-game sweep of Austin College in a rain-shortened series. The week opened on Tuesday night against cross-town rival Mississippi College. The Majors maintained their perfect record against the Choctaws this season with a 6-3 win in Clinton. Game one with AC quickly became a pitchers' duel. AC’s Tyler Steed was perfect through four innings, and despite some early set-backs, Millsaps' ace Aaron Williams was able to keep the 'Roos off the board through six. The first run came thanks to Will Hawkins in the bottom of the fifth. Hawkins broke up the 'Roos perfect game in the leadoff spot in the inning. Jason Riggins came up with the win in the start for the Majors, going seven innings giving up seven hits and three runs. He struck out six and walked just one in 28 batters faced. The Majors have a Tuesday afternoon game at home against Huntingdon before hitting the road this weekend for a pivotal two-game set at Trinity.
Oglethorpe lost its only game of the week at Covenant College, 11-7 to see their record fall to 3-7 on the season. Oglethorpe traveled to Sewanee for a weekend series that was completely washed out by rain. The Petrels will have a chance to get their season back on track when they face Hampden-Sydney tomorrow at Coolray Field, the home of the AAA Gwinnett Braves.
Rhodes went 2-2 this week, sweeping a 2 game mid-week series with visiting N.C. Wesleyan. Rhodes won the first game 6-5 on a walk-off double by sophomore 3B Lynden Pindling. The following day Rhodes defeated N.C. Wesleyan 8-4, as the Lynx used 5 different pitchers in a designed pitcher by committee outing. Junior Remick Smothers picked up his first collegiate victory to improve to 1-0 on the year. Rhodes traveled to Demorest, Ga. on Friday to take on Piedmont and Montclair State. Rhodes fell to Piedmont 6-5 in 10 innings and Montclair State 14-5. Against Montclair State, Rhodes jumped out to an early 4 run lead, but gave up 11 unanswered runs in the 7th and 8th innings. The Rhodes offense was led by Pindling who hit .467 (7-15) with 7 runs, 6 RBIs, 3 walks, 2 doubles, and a triple. Pindling had a on base percentage of .556 and a slugging percentage of .733. Sophomore Tony Pikos had his best performance of the year against Montclair State working 5 innings, allowing 6 hits, no earned runs, and struck out 9. Rhodes will return to action this against MacMurray College before heading to Port Charlotte, Fla. for their spring break trip. Rhodes will take on #1 Heidelberg, Carthage, and #19 Wooster while in Fla.
Sewanee dropped a single game to Maryville, 9-7, on Tuesday before poor weather conditions forced the postponement of the Tigers’ weekend series with Oglethorpe. Against the Scots, Sewanee found themselves down 3-0 after just the first inning before tying the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second. Joe Reilly drove in two runs in the second inning with a double before Chris Mauro’s solo homerun to left field in the bottom of the third gave Sewanee a 4-3 lead. The Tigers pushed their lead to 6-3 in the fifth but Maryville got a five-run sixth to take a 9-6 lead. Sewanee added a run in the bottom of the eighth when Allen Thigpen crossed home plate, but it wasn’t enough as Maryville took home the 9-7 win. Sewanee out hit Maryville, 10-7, and Alan Komorowski took the loss for the Tigers. Sewanee is 1-5 on the season and will head to Rust College for a doubleheader on March 10.
No. 12 Trinity went 4-1 over the past week, bumping the team’s winning streak to 13 games before losing on Saturday. The Tigers swept a Friday night doubleheader from Dallas Christian, but then lost the SCAC series opener with Southwestern. Trinity did bounce back to earn a weekend split with the Pirates with a win on Sunday. Earlier in the week, the Tigers finished off a series sweep against Mary Hardin-Baylor, winning 7-4. Trinity will play four home games this week, taking on DeSales University on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a two-game SCAC series with Millsaps on Saturday and Sunday. Last season, Trinity defeated DeSales 18-4 and 20-8, but split two games with Millsaps.
