SUWANEE, Ga. - SCAC action got underway this past weekend with DePauw, Trinity, Southwestern and Colorado College all posting perfect 2-0 records. This marks the tenth straight season the Tigers of Trinity have gotten off to a 2-0 start in SCAC play.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College went 1-0-1 over
the weekend, coming from behind twice to tie Birmingham-Southern
before holding off Millsaps for a 1-0 victory on Sunday to improve
to 4-2-2 on the season. Against Birmingham-Southern, the
‘Roos got a first half goal from Joey Alcocer to knot things
at 1-1, and after the Panthers went on top and looked to have the
win secured, Andy Johnson found the back of the net in the 86th
minute to force overtime and help secure the tie. On Sunday the
’Roos got a goal from Memo Allande on a feed from Jason
Campbell in the 31st minute and managed to hold off the Majors the
rest of the way in the single goal victory. Grant Gosselin made a
combined 13 saves in the two matches and got his second shutout of
the year against Millsaps. The ’Roos head on the road to take
on Sewanee and Oglethorpe this weekend.
Birmingham-Southern was on the road this week to open
conference play, tying with Austin College, 2-2, on Friday, and
losing a tough one to Colorado College, 1-0, on Sunday. Junior
Garner Shivers leads the Panthers with three goals and three
assists for nine points, followed by junior Tony Crocker with three
goals and two assists. Junior Tyler Evans and sophomore Nicholas
Reitmeier also have three goals apiece. Senior goalkeeper Shachar
Hovan owns a 1.10 GAA with one shutout, and freshman keeper Alex
Levinson has a 1.71 GAA.
Centre played three games this week, posting a 1-1-1
record. Centre had a midweek game against Thomas More College
before opening conference play at home versus Sewanee and
Oglethorpe. Against Thomas More, the Colonels played a solid
first-half before the game was halted due to weather. Once play
opened up again, the Colonels conceded a goal and ended up losing
away 1-0. Centre returned home to open up conference play on Friday
night. Hosting Sewanee, the Colonels battled to a 0-0 draw on
Friday night. On Sunday, the Colonels went down in the first 40
seconds, before opening up the scoring en route to a 4-1 win,
getting a pair of braces from Austin Hall and Josh Settle. Overall,
the Colonels moved to 6-2-1 on the year. Next week the Colonels are
away at Millsaps College on Friday and Birmingham Southern College
on Sunday.
Colorado College began the week with a
1-1 ties against Wheaton College. Ogilvie tied the game with 3:41
remaining in the second half off a pass from fellow freshman Ben
Glass. CC posted back-to-back shutouts in conference play for the
first time since the 2008 season and opened its SCAC schedule with
a pair of victories for the third time in four years. Senior
goalkeeper Andy McGhie made four saves en route to his fourth
shutout of the season as the Tigers defeated Millsaps College, 1-0,
in the first SCAC match for both teams. CC has now won all four of
its conference openers. Freshman forward Brandon Ogilvie scored the
only goal of the game during the seventh minute on a header off a
feed from freshman forward Sean Parham. The Tigers posted a 20-7
advantage in total shots and enjoyed an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.
Colorado College used a relentless defense and a timely goal from
Ogilvie to defeat Birmingham-Southern College, 1-0, on Sunday. CC
allowed just nine total shots en route to its fifth shutout of the
season. The Tigers have now played 286:15 since surrendering a goal
during the third minute of the 1-1 tie vs. Wheaton College. McGhie
had three saves while recording his fifth shutout of the season and
the seventh of his career, and lowering his goals-against average
to 0.95. Ogilvie broke the tie in the 70th minute when he converted
on a hard cross from Parham. He extended his goal-scoring streak to
four games with his second consecutive game winner, both of which
were set up by Parham. Colorado College embarks on a four-match
road swing next weekend with games at Oglethorpe University and
Sewanee on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
#25 DePauw is 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the SCAC after 1-0
home wins over Oglethorpe and Sewanee. The Tigers have shut out
seven opponents this season. Ryan Keefe scored off of a free kick
in the 81st minute to lead the Tigers to Friday's win over
Oglethorpe. The free kick came after an Oglethorpe player was sent
off with a red card. Oglethorpe outshot the Tigers, 11-7, and held
a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Nate Sprenkel made
seven saves for DePauw. Andrew Desmarais tallied the lone goal of
the game in the win over Sewanee as he delivered a header on a
double assist from Louie Souza and Danny Witzerman. DePauw held a
15-3 advantage in shots, putting six shots on goal in the contest.
Both DePauw and Sewanee recorded six corner kicks each. Sprenkel
made two saves in goal for DePauw.
Hendrix went 0-2 in its first Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference weekend of the season with a 7-3 loss to No. 7
Trinity University on Friday night at Warrior Field. The
Warriors then dropped a 4-2 match to Southwestern University on
Sunday afternoon to move their overall mark to 3-3. Trinity
grabbed a come-from-behind victory over Hendrix in front of a
raucous capacity crowd, led by first year midfielder Yuri Ribeiro
with a hat trick to earn the second-half comeback. The Tigers
grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the eighth minute, however, the
Warriors managed to score three unanswered goals to take a 3-2
advantage into the break. Sophomore forward Connor Silvestri
led Hendrix with two goals and junior forward Duncan Keegan netted
the Warriors’ final goal. After Ribeiro scored his
second goal of the night just one minute into the second half to
tie the game at 3-3, sophomore midfielder Nima Naderi recorded the
game-winning goal on a shot to the top right corner from 13 yards
out and off junior forward Cameron Hogsett’s second assist of
the night. The Tigers put the game away with a 5-0 advantage
in the second half. Southwestern snatched a victory despite
being whistled for 20 fouls in a physical contest on a windy Sunday
afternoon at Warrior Field. Southwestern owned an 18-7 shot
advantage, including nine chances on-goal. Hendrix was first
to reach the scoreboard on junior defender Ian Evan’s header
in the 15th minute. The Pirates went ahead with two goals
before the break and never looked back. The Warriors gave up
a goal inside the first minute of the second half for the second
straight game to give Southwestern a 3-1 lead with 44 minutes to
go. Silvestri collected his ninth goal of the year to make it
a one-score contest on a penalty kick in the 50th minute.
Southwestern headed a corner kick in just two minutes later to
reach the final mark.
Millsaps offensive woes continued this week as the Majors
dropped two on the road at Colorado College and Austin. The Majors
fell 1-0 on both Friday and Sunday. The losses drop Millsaps to
2-4-1 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. The Majors were
unable to get anything going on the board over the two-game stretch
and were held scoreless in both contests. They will attempt to
right the ship this weekend as they host Centre and DePauw in the
weekend double-header. Game times are set for 8:00 p.m. with the
Colonels on Friday then at 3:00 p.m. against the Tigers on
Sunday.
Oglethorpe lost a pair of conference matches this past
weekend, falling to DePauw (1-0) on Friday) and dropping to Centre
(4-1) on Sunday. The Tigers scored the game winner on Friday off a
free kick that came in the game’s 81st minute. On Sunday,
junior Russell Thompson notched the Petrels only goal of the
weekend against the Colonels. Oglethorpe is now 4-2-1 on the season
and will return home to host conference matches versus Colorado and
Austin this weekend.
Rhodes dropped both of their SCAC games this
weekend. Rhodes hosted Southwestern University on
Friday. Southwestern went ahead 1-0 halfway through the first
half, and then tallied another ten minutes later, going into the
half with a 2-0 lead. The Pirates were able to tack on one
more in the second half, winning the game 3-0. Rhodes hosted
Trinity University on Sunday. Trinity topped the Lynx 4-1,
with Rhodes’ sole goal coming from senior midfielder, Brett
Simek, on a penalty kick.
Sewanee battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie with Centre
College on Friday night before dropping a 1-0 decision to DePauw
University on Sunday. In a rainy contest in Danville, Kentucky,
Sewanee and Centre battled through 110 minutes of scoreless play.
The Tigers took 23 shots on the night, while Centre finished with
18. The Tigers’ and Colonels’ defenses stood firm all
evening. Sewanee goalkeeper Freddie Delchamps finished with eight
saves on the evening. On Sunday, Sewanee traveled to Greencastle,
Indiana to take on host DePauw University in their second SCAC
matchup of the weekend. Andrew Desmairas scored the lone goal in
the contest and it was all DePauw needed to put the purple Tigers
away. Sewanee only managed three shots in the contest, up against
DePauw’s 15. Delchamps collected five saves for the Tigers.
Sewanee drops to 2-5-1 on the year after the weekend’s
contests, and 0-1-1 in conference play. They will return to action
on Friday when they host Austin College in an SCAC
match.
Southwestern got off to a great start in SCAC Conference
action, winning both games over the weekend. The Pirates are
currently 4-3 on the year and 2-0 in the SCAC. Friday night SU
found themselves in a rough and tumble match with Rhodes College as
the two teams combined for 22 fouls. Southwestern led in both
offensive categories for the 2-1 win. Sunday was much of the same
as SU faced Hendrix, dominating the offensive stats and playing a
physical game. Southwestern took the win 4-3 with a steady
offensive attack. The Pirates return to non-conference action over
the weekend as they head to San Antonio for a pair of neutral site
matches against Rowan and Christopher Newport.
No. 7 Trinity opened up conference play with a pair of
strong victories at Hendrix and Rhodes over the weekend, improving
to 6-1 on the season. First-year Yuri Ribiero scored his first
career hat trick to lead the Tigers in a 7-3 win over Hendrix on
Friday, then four different Trinity players scored in
Sunday’s 4-1 win over Rhodes. Overall, eight different
Trinity players scored on the team’s 11 goals over the
weekend. Trinity returns home this weekend for a pair of
non-conference games. The Tigers will face Rowan University on
Friday, followed by a matchup of two of Division III’s
top-ranked teams in Christopher Newport and Trinity on
Saturday.
