SUWANEE, Ga. - The SCAC wrapped up the 2010 regular season this past weekend with five games, including three games matching SCAC opponents. Centre, Millsaps, Rhodes and Trinity all ended the season with wins while DePauw continues it season next week in the Division III playoffs at home against MIAA champion Trine.

Austin College fell in a 21-3 hole at halftime and was unable to climb out despite a big second quarter, falling 28-24 to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Trinity in the team’s season finale on Saturday. The ‘Roos finish the season with a 4-5 overall record. The ‘Roos out-scored the Tigers 21-7 in the second half including a last second touchdown pass from Travis Zambiasi to Braydon MaQuar, but the big first half deficit proved to be too much for the ‘Roos. Zambiasi threw for 269 yards and a pair of scores and added 117 yards on the ground and Greg Harrell caught nine passes for 151 yards while Broc Boyd carried nine times for 54 yards and a touchdown. MaQuar finished with nine catches for 68 yards and Ethan Tanner led the defense with 12 tackles. Kenneth Eneh, Evan Coachman and Josh Willis each had nine stops and Matt Finke had an interception in the loss.
Centre won its 13th season finale in the last 15 tries and seventh straight season finale played at home in defeating visiting LaGrange 48-7 Saturday, Nov. 13 in Danville, Ky. The win marked the second straight week the Colonels held an opponent to only seven points. Centre scored points four different ways, including a touchdown run, touchdown pass, field goal and a punt return for a score. Not only did the defense limit LaGrange to only seven points, it also intercepted four passes and gained 124 yards on the returns. Centre has now won both meetings against LaGrange since the Panthers started playing football in 2006. The win also gives the Colonels their fourth straight winning season.
Millsaps closed the 2010 season on Saturday with a 28-17 win over Birmingham-Southern. With the victory, the Majors finish the year 7-3 with a second place finish in SCAC-play. The two teams went back-and-forth with the Majors answering every scoring drive by the Panthers with one of their own to gain and maintain the lead. The Panthers cut the lead to four at the end of the third quarter, 21-17. On the ensuing drive the Major offense went eight plays down the field to the BSC 46 but was unable to convert on 4th-and-three turning the ball over on downs. Fortunately, the defense held strong, forcing the Panther's offense to go four-and-out on their possession. The Majors capitalized this time, driving 38 yards and setting up Shane Bowser for a 16 yard rush to the end zone to give Millsaps the 28-17 lead with 5:59 remaining. Shane Bowser ended the day with 212 yards rushing with two touchdowns. Michael Galatas had 72 yards receiving with a long of 30. Garrett Pinciotti completed 24 passes for 246 yards on the day with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Will Hawkins led the defense with 10 tackles on the day and had one interception with a four-yard return.
A Matt Gilbert two yard touchdown run with 1:02 to play lifted Rhodes to a 20-16 win over Sewanee, in the annual Orgill Trophy game. Gilbert’s touchdown run capped a five play 62 yard drive and gave Rhodes their fifth consecutive win over the Tigers and their seventh win in the last eight games of the series. Rhodes now owns a 29-27-1 record in the annual Orgill Trophy game. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Perkins connected with sophomore wide receiver Jack Lartigue on a 35 yard reception to the Sewanee 2 yard-line that setup the game winning score. On the game winning drive Lartigue caught two passes for 60 yards. For the day Perkins was 11 of 24 for 162 yards and one interception. Gilbert capped a brilliant Lynx career with a work horse performance. On the day Gilbert rushed 30 times for 116 yards and one touchdown. For the season Gilbert finished with 796 yards rushing. Senior linebacker Andrew Meier led the defense with nine tackles and finished the 2010 campaign with a team best 96 tackles.
Sewanee took a 16-13 lead late in the fourth quarter before the visiting Rhodes Lynx were able to score with just a minute left to pull out the 20-16 win. The first half turned out to be a defensive battle. The Tigers were forced to start three consecutive drives at their own one-yard line, the last of which came on a fumble recovery. Rhodes had been lined up at the Sewanee three and was driving before Lynx quarterback Tyler Perkins was stopped at the line of scrimmage and Sewanee’s Andrew Walters forced him to fumble the ball. John Philip Boudreaux recovered for the Tigers and the Tigers took over at the one again. After being forced to punt on that drive, the Tigers converted a second fumble recovery just two drives later into a score. Geoff Marolda nailed a 37-yard field goal to put Sewanee up 3-0 heading into halftime. Rhodes answered with two field goals from Lukas Stockhausen early in the third quarter to make it 6-3. Following the second field goal, Sewanee quarterback Lee Schurlknight connected with Curtis Johnson for a 23-yard touchdown, making it 10-6. Marolda connected on the 37-yarder, making it 16-13 Sewanee.
