Women's Lacrosse Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Centre continues to impress staying undefeated in their first year as a program after picking up wins over Millsaps and Dallas over the weekend. Colorado College showed well after defeating Swarthmore and Wooster who was an NCAA tournament team from a season ago.

Birmingham-Southern was 1-1 this week with an exciting double-overtime win against Kenyon College at home, Monday night, and a neutral-site loss to Pomona-Pitzer College, Sunday, in Dallas, Texas. In the win against Kenyon, freshman Madeline Golden scored the game-tying goal with a minute left, sending the game to overtime, and junior Chelsea Van Voorhis scored the game-winning goal in the last half of the second overtime period. The Panthers stay in Dallas this week for two more games, facing Nazareth College, Tuesday, and Dallas, Thursday.
   
Centre faced Millsaps College for the second time this season on Saturday, March 12 and they were able to down the Major’s again by a score of 14-2. The team used a 8-0 run in the first half of action to help them beat Millsaps. The Colonels played again on Sunday, March 13 this time taking on the University of Dallas and the Colonels were able to improve to 6-0 on the season, as they won 15-4. Centre remained at 1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference following the two games this week.

Colorado College erased a three-goal deficit early in the second half to record a 13-11 victory over Swarthmore College. Sarah Phillips tied the game at 9-9 on her first goal with 10:11 to play, and then put the Tigers ahead to stay when she converted on a free-position shot 2:28 later. Elise Burchard ignited a 7-1 run 5:20 into the second half with her second goal and then set up Anna Crosby’s game winner with 4:28 remaining on the clock. Trailing 7-4 late in the first half, the Tigers got a much-needed lift when Hadley Bergh took a cross-field pass from Kelsey Morell and scored on a one-timer from just outside the left post with 24.8 seconds to go. Swarthmore took an 8-5 when it scored 2:37 into the second half, but CC responded by scoring seven of the next eight goals. Abby Fink gave Colorado College a chance to come back by making 10 of her 16 saves during the second half, six of which came on free-position shots. It marked the seventh time she has recorded double-digit saves and 16 is the most she has recorded during one of her 11 career victories. Grace Maloney paced the Tigers with four goals, while Burchard finished with two scores and a pair of assists. Maloney struck for three goals and set up three others as CC pulled away in the second half to post a 13-7 victory over the The College of Wooster on Sunday. Ginna Oates snapped a 5-5 tie with an unassisted marker 5:05 into the second frame and Kelsey Morell capped a four-goal run with consecutive tallies that gave the Tigers a 9-5 lead with 17:55 to go. Morell scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 19:08 remaining off a pass from Oates. While the offense exploded for eight goals in the final 30 minutes, the Colorado College defense allowed just two. Fink made seven of her 10 saves in the second half to improve to 3-0 this season between the pipes. Oates caused four of the Scots’ 26 turnovers and grabbed five ground balls. Hollis Moore also scooped up five ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers. Burchard finished with three goals and assist for CC, which also got a pair of scores from Sarah Phillips. It marked the first time Wooster had played at Colorado College since a first-round game in the 2003 NCAA Tournament in which the Tigers won by an identical score. CC opens its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Wednesday when the Tigers play host to Millsaps College.

Millsaps lost to Centre for the second time in six days on Saturday, this time at home, as the Colonels handed the Majors a double-digit loss, 14-2. The Colonels jumped out and scored seven goals in the opening ten minutes and the Majors never recovered. The first goal came just 21 seconds into the game on Centre's first possession. Claire Stamm scored Millsaps' first goal with 15:28 remaining to put the Colonel lead at 8-1. The Majors' second goal came from Haleigh Williams with 9:50 left. Centre out-shot the Majors 25-13 on the day. Madelyn Walker had four saves in goal for Millsaps, Lauren Esterle had three for the Colonels. Both played the full 60 minutes. The Majors will head up to Colorado next week for three games at Colorado College. They will take on Mesa State University on Tuesday in Colorado Springs at 1:00 p.m.

Sewanee picked up their first two wins of the season this week, evening their overall record to 2-2 with wins over Kenyon and Guilford Colleges. The Tigers picked up win number one with a tight 10-9 win over the Ladies of Kenyon. Sewanee took a 9-5 lead into the intermission before the two teams traded goals to open the second half. The Ladies rattled off three straight goals in the final minutes to pull within one with just 28 seconds remaining. But the Tigers were able to hold off the attack and clinch the 10-9 victory. Carly Grimm notched two goals and two assists in the win, while junior goalkeeper Amy Nusbaum recorded 11 saves. Against the Quakers of Guilford, seven Tigers found the back of the net as Sewanee battled to a 16-13 win. Meg Welton tallied four goals in the win, while Grimm and Allison Bland added three each. Nusbaum recorded a season-high 12 saves in the win. The Tigers travel to Texas for their next three contests, including a doubleheader Tuesday against Pomona-Pitzer and the University of Dallas.
