Colorado College posted victories
at Oglethorpe and Sewanee to begin conference play with a 4-0
record for the first time since joining the SCAC. The four-match
winning streak matches the Tiger’s longest in conference play
first set in 2007. CC came from behind to defeat the Stormy Petrels
on Friday. When Oglethorpe scored during the seventh minute, it was
the first goal the Tigers have allowed in conference play this
season and snapped a scoreless streak of 293.14 that began during
the opening minutes of the contest against Wheaton College on Sept.
20. Colorado College got the equalizer during the 19th minute when
Sean Parham scored on the rebound of a Brandon Ogilvie header off
the crossbar. The Tigers took the lead in the 44th minute when a
Nick Lammers pass defected off Daniel Wright and went to Matt
Fechter, who scored with a shot toward the right post. Andy McGhie
stopped all four shots he faced and Fechter scored the only goal
the Tigers would need as CC defeated Sewanee, 2-0, on Sunday
Fechter found the net 7:30 into the second half on a free kick to
the upper left corner from 25 yards. It was his third game winner
of the season and fourth of his career. The Tigers added an
insurance goal during the 77th minute when Parham scored after
taking a through ball from Ogilvie. Parham scored a goal in both
contests this weekend while Ogilvie extended his points streak to
six games. Colorado College stays on the road this weekend for
games at Trinity University and Southwestern on Friday and Sunday,
respectively.
With a tie and a win, 20th-ranked DePauw
clinched its 29th straight .500 or better season. The Tigers
improved to 9-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference with a 0-0
tie at Birmingham-Southern and a 2-1 win at Millsaps.
Birmingham-Southern outshot DePauw 22-14 and held a 7-5 edge in
corners, but neither team found the back of the net in 110 minutes.
Nate Sprenkel totaled four saves. Millsaps jumped out to a 1-0 lead
in the opening three minutes, but Ryan Keefe and Dean Weaver scored
to give the Tigers the win. DePauw held a 23-4 edge in shots and a
12-1 advantage in corners. Sprenkel totaled one save. In their 11
contests, the Tigers have allowed just three goals and shut out
eight opponents.
Hendrix split a pair of games this week with a 3-1 victory
over Williams Baptist College on Tuesday and a 2-1 loss at Rhodes
College on Saturday. The Warriors now stand at 4-4 overall
and 0-3 in SCAC play. Sophomore forward Connor
Silvestri’s goal in the 66th minute against Williams Baptist
matched the Warriors’ career goal record of 19 scores.
Junior midfielder Taylor Davenport put Hendrix on top with the
opening goal in the 10th minute off a rebound from five yards
out. Junior midfielder Colin Thompson gave the Warriors a 2-0
lead just four minutes before the break when he sent a cross from
Silvestri through the keeper’s legs. Silvestri etched
his name in the Hendrix record book off a double assist from
sophomore midfielder Dylan Reed and junior forward Duncan
Keegan. Reed intercepted a goal kick and chipped the ball
forward to Keegan, who then crossed the ball from the left side to
find a wide open Silvestri. The Eagles scored their lone goal
when senior forward Jorge Mojica broke away from the defense and
slipped the ball by they goalkeeper from 15 yards out.
Warriors’ first year goalie Robbie White made his first
collegiate start and had a solid night in front of the net with six
saves. The Hendrix offense outshot its opponent 21-12.
Rhodes struck early off a corner kick and eventually scored the
game-winning goal in the 33rd minute to overcome Hendrix on
Saturday afternoon. Lynx first year defender Patrick Harris
found the back of the net off a corner kick in the fourth
minute. Keegan tied the game with his fourth goal of the
season in the 33rd minute off an assist from Thompson. Rhodes
sophomore forward Petar Radujkovic then netted the game winner on
an unassisted score 14 seconds after Hendrix knotted the
game.
Millsaps dropped a pair of matches this weekend at Harper
Davis Field. Centre took a 2-0 win from the Majors on Friday night
before DePauw got the 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. The losses
drop the Majors to 2-6-1 on the season, they remain winless in SCAC
competition at 0-4. The lone offensive bright spot for Millsaps
came two minutes into Sunday’s match with the Tigers. Trey
Fontaine found Andrew Moise in front of the Tiger net before anyone
in the stadium knew what happened. Despite solid defensive efforts
in both games, the Majors offense continued to sputter to withhold
the first conference win of the season. The Majors will have one
more home match on Wednesday with Huntingdon before heading over to
Texas next weekend for two more non-conference matches with Dallas
Christian and the University of Dallas.
Oglethorpe split two conference matches this past
weekend at home, falling to Colorado on Friday, 2-1 and besting
Austin on Sunday, 3-0. Against Colorado, The Petrels took a 1-0
advantage in only the game's 7th minute when Russell Thompson found
a streaking Nick Williamson down the far side of the pitch.
Williamson took one touch before cracking an incredible shot across
the face of the goal and past the Tiger keeper for the 1-0
advantage. The Tigers, however, responded with goals in the game's
18th minute and then again just before half in the 44th minute to
earn a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. Each team managed 13
shots on the afternoon and Oglethorpe held a 5-4 advantage on
corner kicks. Against Austin, The Petrels started the scoring in
the 21st minute when some hard work from E.J. Ovie-Ogodo left Aaron
Walker a shot he fired past the "Roos keeper for the early lead.
The Petrels struck again early in the second half when a run from
Russell Thompson yielded Harrison McConnell room to shoot from 25
yards out. The keeper misplayed the blast and Oglethorpe earned
some separation with the goal. Oglethorpe capped the scoring in the
84th minute when Thompson recorded a goal of his own off a nice
feed from Ricardo Morgan. Oglethorpe outshot the 'Roos 12-8 and the
Petrels placed an impressive 9 of the shots on goal. With the
results Oglethorpe is now 5-3-1 on the season and will travel to
face Sewanee this Saturday night at 9:00 p.m.
Rhodes won their only game of the weekend,
defeating SCAC opponent, Hendrix College, at home 2-1. Rhodes
opened up the scoring just 5 minutes into the match, as freshman
defender, Patrick Harris, bent in a corner kick to the far
post. Hendrix would knot the score up at 1-1 in the 34th
minute on a header from Connor Silvestri. However, Rhodes
would answer before the half, as sophomore, Petar Radujkovich
vollied a shot home just outside the box. The second half saw
chances from both sides, with the best going to Hendrix, who was
award a penalty kick. Senior Lynx goalkeeper, Justin
Stradley, stood up to the challenge, saving the penalty, which
preserved the 2-1 win.
Sewanee battled through 110 minutes of play with
Austin College on Friday, before ending in a 2-2 tie after two
overtimes. The Tigers played most of the second half and both
overtime periods down one man, but were able to hold on for the
tie. In an ultra-physical match that resulted in a combined 30
fouls and eight cards, the Tiger defense stepped up when it counted
and walked away with a tie for the second tie in three conference
matches. Sewanee’s Watson Hartsoe placed one in the net at
the 20 minute mark of the first half and the score would remain 1-0
until halftime. In the second, Austin’s Chris Melton knotted
it at one apiece with a goal. Sewanee junior Matt Lightfoot gave
the Tigers the lead with just ten minutes left in play, but Melton
found the goal again with just five minutes left to make it 2-2 and
force overtime. Despite 20 minutes of overtime play, neither team
could find the goal again, as the match ended in a 2-2 tie. On
Sunday, the Tigers played hosted to Colorado College and the
visiting Tigers needed two goals in the second half to get the win
in Sewanee. Colorado’s Matt Fechter put one in the goal at
the seven-minute mark of the second half. Sean Parham added an
insurance goal with 15 minutes remaining in the contest, making it
2-0. Sewanee will host Oglethorpe in an SCAC match-up next
Saturday. The Tigers fall to 2-6-2 on the season and 0-2-2 in SCAC
play.
Southwestern took no breaks on their off weekend from
conference play as they traveled to San Antonio to face
nationally-ranked Christopher Newport and Rowan. SU stepped to the
challenge on Friday night, giving CNU a scare by scoring in the
opening minutes of the game. CNU was able to steal the victory,
however, scoring first on a penalty kick to even the score and then
scoring the game winning goal in the 68th minute. The Pirates took
a moment to regroup in their next contest as Rowan scored in the
early moments of the game but SU evened the count before halftime.
Rowan scored quickly at the start of the second period before
Southwestern got back down to business with two goals in the final
20 minutes. After the split weekend Southwestern sits at 5-4 on the
year. They return to SCAC action where they are 2-0 this weekend,
hosting Austin College on Friday and Colorado College on
Sunday.
No. 5 Trinity went 1-1 over the weekend, defeating Rowan
University 3-0 on Friday night, then getting edged in a 1-0 loss to
top-ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday. The Tigers
pounded out three first-half goals in Friday’s win, setting
up a showdown with the nation’s top-ranked team on
Saturday. After a scoreless first half, CNU was finally able
to get past Trinity’s defense in the 59th minute to score the
eventual game-winner. Trinity will resume SCAC play this weekend,
facing off against Colorado College and Austin College at
home. Last year, the Tigers defeated Austin College 3-0 in
Sherman, Texas, and Trinity won a 1-0 double-overtime game at
Colorado College in 2009.
