Forty Nine Years in the Making; Centre Wins 2011 SCAC Men's Track & Field Title

MEMPHIS, Tenn.
- In the school's 49 years in the College Athletic Conference and then Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Centre College has won 61 conference titles - but none in men's track and field. That is, until today. With a total of 168.5 points, the Colonels won the 2011 SCAC Men's Track & Field Championship title Saturday on the campus of Rhodes College. Centre posted 168.5 points to edge second-place and host Rhodes College, who finished with 152 points. Trinity University was third with a 145 points.

Rounding out the standings, DePauw University, participating in its last SCAC Track & Field Championship, finished fourth with 138.5 points. Colorado College was fifth with 63 points and Millsaps College finished sixth with 43 points.

Sewanee-The University of the South placed seventh with 28 points, Oglethorpe University was eighth with 18 points, Southwestern University followed in ninth with 13 points and Hendrix College came in 10th with seven points.

Rhodes College's Andrew Maryott earned 2011 SCAC Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Meet with 30 points. Maryott posted victories in the shot put, discus throw and hammer throw.

After earning six all-conference honors on Day One, Centre picked up four more on Saturday to post the historic team win.

Senior Clinton Cahall won the 5,000, following a time of 15:13.52. Cahall won the 10,000 meter run on Friday with a time of 32:21.58.

Winning the triple jump was senior all-American Chrys Jones. He won after jumping 46'6.66". He was also fourth in the high jump with a mark of 6'3.98". Jones also posted a winning mark of 22'4.25" in the long jump, on Friday.

During the 400, senior Mike Morrison came in second place, following a time of 49.85.

Sophomore Monte Sharp-Scotton had a second place showing in the 200, as he recorded a time of 22.64.

During the discus throw, James Bozarth took third place, after he posted a mark of 135'7.55". One day one, Bozarth took second place in the hammer throw after he posted a mark of 149'03", setting a new school record. He held the previous record of 139'10", which he set last season. Jacob Carter came in third overall in the event with a mark of 138'06".

On Friday, freshman John Kieffer took second place in the 3,000 steeplechase after recording a time of 9:45.23. He was just shy of setting a new school record in the event, as the current record is 9:45.22.

Other Day One performances included freshman Michael Orr placing second in the pole valut after clearing 12'11.50", and sophomore Alex Calhoun had a second-place showing in the javelin throw, following a throw of 172'05".
