- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College improved to 8-1
overall with a pair of solid road victories over Sewanee and
Oglethorpe over the weekend. The road trip started with a 1-0
victory over the Tigers thanks to a goal from Mackenzie Lund, her
third of the season and first game winner of the year. The shutout
was the sixth of the year for Austin College. On Sunday, the team
needed the late heroics of Chelsea Parker to break a 1-1 tie in the
final minutes to come away with a 2-1 victory over Oglethorpe.
Parker tallied on a rebound in the box in the 86th minute, while
Emma Treu scored her fourth goal in only five games on an assist
from Natalie Nelms earlier in the match. This weekend the team
heads back on the road to take on Southwestern and
Trinity.
Birmingham-Southern went 0-2 at home this week, losing to
DePauw Friday evening, 3-0, and No. 24 Centre on Sunday, 2-1. Linda
Amaya scored BSC's lone goal this week. BSC is now 5-4 overall and
1-2 in the SCAC. The Panthers return to action as they host
University of Auburn-Montgomery Saturday afternoon.
#24 Centre solidified two wins on the road this weekend.
Friday evening, in Jackson Miss. Centre defeated Millsaps 3-1 in
regulation play. Sunday afternoon the Colonels then defeated
Birmingham Southern 2-1, also in regulation play. The road wins
helped Centre improve to 10-regular season wins, which is the
fastest any Centre team has achieved this mark in the school's
history. Centre continues conference play on Friday, October 8th at
home when they face Hendrix. Sunday afternoon, they will face the
Rhodes.
DePauw extended its win streak to five straight, remained
unbeaten in SCAC play at 4-0 and recorded its fourth shutout in the
last five games after blanking Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps by
identical 3-0 scores. In the win over Birmingham-Southern, three
different players scored as Julia Drummond, Emily White and Christy
Fillenwarth each found the back of the net. The Tigers outshot
Birmingham-Southern, 19-11, and held an 8-3 edge in corners. Lauren
Palfrey totaled five saves for DePauw. Alexandra Ehr put the
Tigers on the board first at Millsaps before Laura Kissinger and
Emelie Johansson rounded out the scoring. DePauw outshot Millsaps
20-6 and held a 16-6 edge in corners. Palfrey and Caroline Kerr
split time in goal for the Tigers' fifth shutout of the season.
Hendrix dropped its only game of the week to
Rhodes College, 1-0, in a double-overtime thriller on Saturday
afternoon. Rhodes junior midfielder Zoe Clark netted the game
winning goal after 100 minutes of action. The Warriors fifth
straight loss was their first overtime affair of the year.
Hendrix falls to 1-7 on the season and 0-3 in SCAC action.
The Lynx found their way around the Warriors’ defense and
built a counter attack to give Clark a chance on-goal with 100:34
on the scoreboard. Clark sent a low shot past a diving
goalkeeper from about six yards out on an assist from first year
midfielder Heidi Press. The Hendrix defense held strong
despite allowing 33 shots, including 12 on-goal. Warrior
junior goalkeeper Allison Mosley denied 11 shots in the
contest.
Millsaps’ offensive woes continued this weekend as
the Majors fell to #24 Centre 1-3 on Friday night before being shut
out by DePauw, 0-3, on Sunday. The Majors only offense came on
Friday. Jessica Harris received the ball just beat two Centre
defenders with a one-on-one breakaway with the keeper.
Unfortunately, that would not be enough to hold on for the victory.
The Majors will try to get back on the smiling side of the
scoreboard this Wednesday as they host Huntingdon College for a
5:00 p.m. match at Harper Davis Field.
Oglethorpe went 0-1-1 on the weekend, tying Dallas on
Friday, 1-1 and falling to Austin on Sunday, 2-1. Against Dallas,
the Crusaders struck first after a lapse in the Petrels defense
gave Claire Sexton a breakaway goal for Dallas in the early stages
of the contest. Oglethorpe equalized in the game's 20th minute on a
strike from Lexi Vassell. Vassell took a feed from Cassie Della
Fortuna and beat several Crusader defenders before lofting a
perfect shot past the keeper for the goal. The two sides played a
scoreless second half and two overtime periods and the game ended
in a tie. Against Austin, the Petrels fell behind the 'Roos 1-0 in
the first half after a long ball played into the box found the back
of the net. Oglethorpe equalized the game in the 67th minute on a
perfectly executed cross from Alexandria Vassell that found the
foot of Haley Lister for the strike. The 'Roos got the game winner,
however, in the 86th minute when a rebounded shot inside the box
eluded Sarah Nania and was put away by Austin for the victory. With
the results Oglethorpe is 6-3-1 on the season and will get set to
host Atlanta Christian this Tuesday on Salamone Field at 4:00
p.m.
Rhodes won their only game of the weekend, defeating SCAC
opponent, Hendrix College, at home 1-0 in double overtime.
Despite the tight score line, it was Rhodes in possession of the
game, outshooting Rhodes 33-6 and dominating in corners 9-1.
Rhodes missed several opportunities inside the box, including one
that hit off the crossbar. As the game slipped into the 2nd
overtime period, freshman Heidi Press played a diagonal ball to
junior, Zoe Clark, who tucked away the game winner, beating the
Hendrix goalie near post.
Sewanee went 1-1 on the weekend after falling to Austin
College on Friday, 1-0, and defeating the University of Dallas 7-0
on Sunday. Austin needed just one goal, a shot by Mackenzie Lund
with nine minutes left in the first, to get past the Tigers, 1-0.
But Sunday was a different story, and the day belonged to Sewanee
sophomore Bess Goodman. Goodman scored four goals in the contest,
including three in the last eight minutes, to help the Tigers put
away Dallas. Goodman opened up the scoring with her first goal of
the day just seven minutes into the game. Her unassisted shot found
its way past Dallas keeper Brigid Hasson to make it 1-0 Sewanee.
Both defenses held on for the rest of the half though and both
teams headed into the half with Sewanee up 1-0. The Tiger offense
picked up the pace in the second half, as they poured on 21 shots
and scored six goals. Lizzie Butler started the barrage just seven
minutes in with an assist from Ellie Quinn. Fristl Butler got in on
the action at the 66th minute when she took a pass from Kabler
Calhoun and scored. Three minute’s after Fritsl
Butler’s goal, Layne Ezzell found the net with an assist from
Caroline Beitel. Then Goodman struck again. She scored three goals
in the last eight minutes and one second, her second goal of the
day came at the 81:59 mark, her third at the 88:16 mark, and the
fourth with just 50 seconds left to play. Goodman’s goals
made it 7-0 Sewanee. Sewanee out shot Dallas, 37-2 in the contest.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday when they host Oglethorpe
in SCAC play.
Southwestern hosted conference rival Trinity on Saturday
afternoon and fell 3-0 to the #15 ranked Tigers. Trinity scored
mid-way through the first half after counter offensive attacks by
both teams. The Tigers pulled further ahead on a header that snuck
inside the far post to go up 2-0. The Pirates had many
well-executed attacks and opportunities but were unable to
capitalize. SU ended up falling 3-0 to drop to 4-3-1 overall and
1-2 in the SCAC. They travel to Hardin Simmons University on
Tuesday for a match against the nationally-ranked Cowgirls
beginning at 4:00 before hosting Austin College and the University
of Dallas on Friday and Sunday.
#15 Trinity continued SCAC play with a game at
Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon, earning a 3-0
shutout victory to stay unbeaten in conference play. The Tigers
have won six straight games heading into this week, which will
begin with a rescheduled game from earlier in the year.
Trinity hosts Mary Hardin-Baylor Monday night, then will remain at
home to face Dallas and Austin College. Trinity last faced UMHB in
2008, earning a 4-0 win. Last season against Dallas, the
Tigers also won 4-0, but needed double overtime to earn a 2-1
victory over Austin College.
