Oglethorpe Tied for the Lead; Centre in Tenth After Round One of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships

- Senior Craig Stevenson of Oglethorpe fired an opening round best 66 (-6) to lead the entire championships field and help position the Stormy Petrels in a tie for first place with a team score of 286 after the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. Official website

Playing on the Grandover Resort and Conference Center West Course, the Petrels got a great round from freshman Anthony Amodeo, getting his first taste of Championship action, posting a round of 2-under 70 to back Stevenson up.

Sophomore Eric Quinn, meanwhile, carded a 74 (+2) when a double bogey on the par-5 16th derailed an even par round. Stevenson is alone in first place individually while Amodeo and Quinn check in tied for 6th and 43rd, respectively. Junior Jordan Hall re-grouped after a first nine 40 to play the back nine at level par to finish the day at +4, in a tie for 79th place.

Senior Chris Morris led the way for Centre, as he shot a 67 (-5) and currently sits in second place individually right behind Stevenson. The Colonels finished the first round of play with a team score of 296, which put them in ninth place overall.

Senior Lyndon Jones is tied for 43rd place following a 74 on the first day of play.  Sophomore Grant Hinton posted a 77 on Tuesday and is tied for 90th. Tied for 107th place is sophomore Patrick Davidson who shot a 78.  Rounding out the top five for the Colonels is sophomore Kenyon Cook who recorded an 81. Cook is tied for 156th place.

The Colonels played its first round on the East Course which proved to play a bit more difficult on day one.

St. John’s University is currently tied with Oglethorpe for first place after both teams shot a 286 during the first 18 holes of play.  Emory University is in third place with a team score of 289.

The NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Tournament will continue at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. on Wednesday, May 11 with the second round of action.
