CLAREMONT, Calif. –
Trinity University Tigers junior Max Frey lost a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 battle in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships Singles semifinals Saturday to fourth seeded Chris Goodwin of Emory.

It marked the first time a Trinity player advanced to the NCAA semifinals since 2005, when Jim Shaughnessy achieved that feat.

Frey, playing in his third straight NCAA Tournament, earlier knocked out No. 2 Alex Lane of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. After beating Emory's Colin Egan 6-1, 6-3 in Friday's opening round, Frey defeated No. 8 Stephen Sullivan of Bowdoin 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 16.

The second set, and the match, appeared to be heading Goodwin's way, as he led Frey 4-2, by a service break. But the tenacious Frey fought back, won the next four games, and evened the contest at one-set apiece.

Goodwin held serve in the first game of the third set. Frey countered in the second game, by use of his strong serve (there were two aces), and the set was tied at 1-1. But Goodwin served up the next game at love, and broke Frey to go up 3-1. Frey did not roll over in that fourth game, as he had saved two break points, one by a service ace.

Then Goodwin won the next three games and earned a berth in Sunday's final against Emory teammate Dillon Pottish, the tournament's top seed.

Frey, who played No. 1 singles for the Tigers, provided the clinch match for the Tigers' last three dual-match victories.

He clinched the 6-3 win over DePauw in the SCAC Championship at North Little Rock, Ark., as the Tigers won their second straight SCAC title, and the 16th overall.

Frey, who will be named an All-American by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for the third time, played the clinch matches for Trinity in the NCAA Regional at St. Peter, Minn. The Tigers, competing in their 18th NCAA postseason tournament, beat host Gustavus Adolphus 5-3, and the University of Chicago 5-2.

Eventual NCAA champion Amherst beat Trinity 5-0 in the NCAA quarterfinals at Claremont. It was the Tigers'14th trip to the final eight.

Trinity senior Bobby Cocanougher lost 6-1, 6-2 to top seed Dillon Pottish of Emory in the opening round. Cocanougher played in his first NCAA Singles event.

Cocanougher and senior Cory Kowal, competing in their third NCAA Tournament, fell 7-5, 6-1 to Amherst's Austin Chafetz and Luis Rattenhuber in the doubles first round. The Amherst duo edged the Tiger tandem 9-7 in last Tuesday's No. 1 doubles match, in the first-round of the team tournament.

Last year, Cocanougher and Kowal had advanced to the doubles championship match.

Trinity, led by second-year head Coach Russell McMindes, completed the season with a 16-13 record.
