Volleyball Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - With another perfect 4-0 week, the Colorado College Tigers took over sole possession of first-place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference after the SCAC East/West crossover at Sewanee. DePauw, Southwestern and Trinity all posted 3-1 records.

AROUND THE SCAC

No. 20 Austin College split its weekend matches against Oglethorpe, Sewanee, DePauw and Trinity over the weekend at the SCAC East/West Crossover, topping OU and Sewanee by scores of 3-0 on day one before falling 3-1 to both DePauw and Trinity on Sunday. Jessica Fleming had another big weekend for Austin College, averaging 3.55 kills and 2.0 blocks per set with a .440 attack percentage and Jordan Anderton averaged 10.91 assists per set for the weekend. Jessica Wash also performed well, averaging 2.62 kills with a .439 attack percentage and 1.38 blocks per set, and Quinn McKee averaged 6.14 digs per set, including 35 digs against Trinity. This week the ’Roos will be stepping out of conference play as they travel to Irving, Texas for a tri-match at the University of Dallas on Friday.
  
Birmingham-Southern had a perfect 5-0 week, defeating Martin Methodist on the road and hosting the BSC Fall Classic, defeating three NAIA teams: Xavier University of Louisiana, Loyola University New Orleans, Dillard University, and Faulkner University. Senior libero Jennifer McKannan recently made history as she became BSC’s all-time digs leader. Senior setter Christine Denning also had an impressive weekend, recording a rare triple-double against Faulkner. The team has now won seven straight matches and is 15-2 on the season.

Centre went 1-3 this past weekend as they opened conference play at Sewanee in the first East/West crossover. On Saturday the Colonels opened SCAC play with a three game loss to Colorado. Later that day Centre played Trinity and had the chance to beat the Tigers for the first time in almost a decade but were unable to seal deal losing the fifth game 9-15. On Sunday morning Centre again had a chance to take down a top 25 program for the first in over a decade by battling with Southwestern to five games, losing 11-15 in the fifth. After losing two very tight matches, Centre was able to pick up a three game win against Oglethorpe to finish the weekend on a positive note. Next up the Colonels will travel to Birmingham-Southern College to take place in the East/Central Cross-over.

Senior middle blocker Emily Perkins moved up on a pair of career lists as No. 7 Colorado College claimed sole possession of first place with four victories at last weekend’s East-West crossover matches at Sewanee. Perkins recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 19 against DePauw, and finished the four matches in second place with 1,485 career kills and third place with 1,393 career digs. Junior setter Amy Schornack tied her career high with 57 assists and moved past Amy Smith (1984-87) for 3rd-place on CC’s career list. Sophomore libero Laura Goldsmith had 28 digs. Colorado College returns to actions for a single match against Division II Colorado State University – Pueblo on Friday.

DePauw improved to 10-8 on the season after posting a 3-1 weekend record in its first SCAC competition of the season. On Saturday, the Tigers opened with a 3-2 win over Trinity and followed with a 3-2 loss to 7th-ranked Colorado College. DePauw defeated 20th-ranked Austin on Sunday, 3-1 and wrapped up play with a 3-0 victory over Sewanee. For the weekend, Annie Collier led the way with 2.93 kills per set, while Paige Thompson hit .292. Ali Smith averaged 10.6 assists per set and Kylee Lehrman totaled 11 service aces. Madison Hoenig was the team leader with 4.53 digs per set and Thompson led with 0.88 blocks each set. As a team the Tigers averaged 11.7 kills and hit .206 while totaling 31 service aces.
  
Hendrix cruised to a pair of straight-set victories to snap its nine-game skid on Sept. 23. The Warriors took down Rust College in the opener and then defeated host Philander Smith College in the night cap. Sophomore middle blocker Melissa Clement tallied nine kills in 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage against Rust and first year outside hitter Jordan Spennato added a career-best seven kills on 15 attempts. Spennato also fired a pair of aces. First year setter Zoe Calhoun dished out 14 assists. Junior outside hitter Jennifer Youngblood led the way with 13 digs and sophomore right-side hitter Kristen Finch made two solo blocks. The Warriors now stand at 6-10 on the year.

Millsaps had the week off. The Majors (9-5 overall, 1-3 SCAC) return to action on Wednesday, September 29 when they travel to Loyola (La.) for a non-conference match before heading to Birmingham-Southern for the SCAC East/Central crossover Oct. 2-3.

Oglethorpe had tough week getting swept in five matches at the hands of Piedmont College, Austin College, Southwestern University, Trinity University and Centre College. The team is now 3-10 on the season and will return home for a non-conference match against Agnes Scott this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. on Pinholster Court.

Rhodes had the week off. The Lynx (6-8 overall, 1-2 SCAC) return to action on Saturday October, 2 at the SCAC East/Central crossover hosted by Birmingham-Southern.  

Sewanee dropped four matches over the weekend, as they hosted the SCAC East-West Cross Divisional. The Tigers fell to Southwestern 3-0 and Austin College 3-0 on Saturday. Tarver Shimek paced the Tigers with eight kills on the day. Liz Boddiford contributed five assists and four kills. On the second day, the Tigers dropped two matches, the first to Colorado College 3-1, and the second to DePauw 3-0. In the first match, Shimek led the way with eight kills, while Adrienne Borchadt tallied 16 assists. Boddiford added five digs, one ace, and two blocks. Against DePauw, Shimek again led Sewanee with five kills. Borchardt tallied eights assists and Callie Sims contributed seven digs and one block. The Tigers are now 0-17 on the season and will travel to Birmingham next weekend for matches against Birmingham-Southern, Oglethorpe, Hendrix, and Millsaps.

No. 17 Southwestern went 3-1 in their second crossover tournament, moving to 14-4 on the season and 6-1 in the SCAC. Southwestern walked through the first day, not dropping a game as they defeated Sewanee and Oglethorpe 3-0. Day two posed a bigger challenge beginning with Centre. The Pirates worked their way to the five game win 3-2 before taking on nationally-ranked Colorado College. The match was what was expected, going five games, but SU was unable to pull off the win as they fell 3-2. Southwestern returns to non-conference action this week as they face Texas Lutheran on Wednesday.

After a slow start in SCAC play, Trinity bounced back by going 3-1 at the SCAC East-West Tournament in Sewanee, Tennessee, this past weekend. The Tigers lost the opening match 3-2 against DePauw, then took a 3-2 win over Centre to finish the first day. Trinity carried that momentum into Sunday’s action, earning a 3-0 win over Oglethorpe. In the final match of the weekend, the Tigers defeated 20th-ranked Austin College 3-1. Trinity will return to action on October 6 in a home matchup with Texas Lutheran University. The following weekend, the Tigers resume SCAC play in Jackson, Miss. Trinity will face Rhodes, Millsaps, Birmingham-Southern, and Colorado College in the two-day tournament.
