HORSESHOE BAY, Texas - The 8th-ranked Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels men's team and the 2nd-ranked DePauw University women's team grabbed the early leads after day one of the 2011 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Golf championships at the Horseshoe Bay Resort Rock Wood and Apple Wood courses, respectively. Oglethorpe senior Craig Stevenson turned in the individual best opening round score as he carded an even-par 71 (34-37). Centre College's Chris Morris shot a 5-over par 76 and is just five strokes back of Stevenson's lead.
Trinity's men's team followed Oglethorpe (318) and is 15 strokes back of the team lead heading into the second round. Centre (336), DePauw (338), Southwestern University (340), Rhodes College (341), Millsaps Collegev(345), Hendrix College (361) and Sewane: University of the South (369) rounded out the rest of the team field on day one.
On the women's side, the DePauw Tigers totaled a team score of 311 to take a 14 stroke lead over 7th-ranked Centre College (325). Rhodes was in third place after tallying a 348 infront of Trinity (357) and Southwestern (360) who are in fourth and fifth, repectively.
DePauw's Kelly Gaughan took the first round individual lead after she shot an even-par 72, including a 35 on the back-nine. Centre's Emily Bachert and DePauw's Paige Gooch tied for second as the pair both shot 77 (+5). Rounding out the top five were Allison Hancock of Centre who shot a +6 (78) and DePauw's Camila Romero who was one stroke back of Hancock.
