Two Late Goals Doom Trinity; Tigers Eliminated with 2-0 Loss to Lynchburg

DELAWARE, Ohio - The Lynchburg Hornets scored a pair of late goals and upset the top-ranked Trinity Tigers 2-0 Saturday night at the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship third round at Ohio Wesleyan's Roy Rike Field.

Trinity completed its season with a 19-3-1 record, and Lynchburg improved to 18-4-1. The Hornets will play the winner of Ohio Wesleyan and Johns Hopkins at 6 p.m. Eastern Sunday in the quarterfinals.

The Tigers, competing in their 14th NCAA Tournament, led 17-9 in total shots, and 10-7 in shots on goal. Trinity sophomore goalkeeper Tim Nelin, of Columbus, Ohio (Olentangy), playing near his hometown, made three saves in the tightly played first half. Nelin recorded two more saves in the second half,  including a penalty kick attempt by Lynchburg's Zach Ward in the 62nd minute.

Lynchburg's Jordan Clark scored the first goal of the game, an unassisted shot in the 78th minute. Clark scored on a loose ball at the top of the box. Donald Hart made it a 2-0 game, in the 81st minute, on a cross from Shane Spanninger. Goalkeeper Michael Releford made nine saves in the game.

Trinity senior midfielder Clay Middleton of San Antonio (Churchill); junior forward Cameron Hogsett of McKinney, Texas (McKinney); and junior midfielder Jordan Wade of Phoenix (Pinnacle) each had two shots on goal.

The Tigers, who played in their ninth NCAA Tournament in a row, opened the postseason with a 3-1 victory over Pacific (Ore.) at the Trinity Soccer Field. Trinity advanced to the third round, 4-2 on penalty kicks over Texas-Tyler, following a 0-0 tie after two overtimes in a
home game.

Earlier, Trinity, led by 20th-year Head Coach Paul McGinlay, won its 14th Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, with an 11-0-0 record.

Trinity will co-host, with San Antonio Sports, the NCAA Division III men's and women's semifinals and finals Dec. 3-4 at San Antonio's Blossom Soccer Stadium. It will mark the second straight year of the Trinity/San Antonio Sports partnership.
