Men's Basketball Recap (Week 1) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Colorado College picked up a signature win in its season opener on November 17 when the Tigers knocked off Division I Air Force, 60-57, in overtime. Tiger senior guard Nick Rose scored a game-high 18 points and came up with the game-winning steal.

Austin College got out to a 1-2 start on the year, falling 98-84 to #23 UT-Dallas to open the year before splitting a pair of home games this weekend against LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist. Against UTD, the ‘Roos led by 10 at the half but a hot shooting second half for the Comets put the ‘Roos away despite a career best 29 points from Josh Saunders. Jordan Hancock added 20 points in the loss. Against LeTourneau the ‘Roos raced out to a 16 point halftime lead and never looked back on their way to an 80-64 victory. Saunders finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocked shots in the win and Hancock scored a game-high 18 in the win. In the final game of the weekend, the ‘Roos had two chances in the final 10 seconds to tie things up but fell short in a 78-75 loss to ETBU. Walter Phillips scored 21 points and added seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks to lead the ‘Roos and Hancock scored 20 points and Saunders finished with 11.
 
Birmingham-Southern opened the season at home this week, hosting the Black Tie Tournament. On Friday, BSC beat University of the Ozarks in thrilling fashion, 72-71. Sophomore Zac Richards posted his first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Patrick Price also recorded 16 points, while junior Jasen Jonus and sophomore Blaise White had 14 points apiece. On Saturday in the championship game, BSC defeat Rust College, 77-63, to win the tournament. Jonus recorded a career-high 28 points, while Richards and freshman Nick Murphy had 10 points apiece. BSC travels to face LaGrange College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET, and is at home again this weekend, hosting University of New Orleans, Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
   
Centre opened the season with wins in each of its first three games rallying to defeat Maryville 76-75 and then winning games over LaGrange (62-48) and Huntingdon (64-45) in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tipoff Classic hosted by LaGrange. It is the first time since the 2004-2005 season in which the Colonels have started the season 3-0 and only the third time during the SCAC era. Centre has shot the ball well in the early going making 51.1% (71-139) of its shots so far, including 20 of 51 (39.2%) from the three-point arc and 74.1% (40-54) from the charity stripe. The Colonels will host Transylvania this week in their home-opener and only game of the week.

Seniors Nick Rose, Brady Ohlsen and Colin Madden combined for 37 points as Colorado College wiped out an eight-point deficit during the final five minutes of regulation and went on to defeat Air Force, 60-57 in overtime, on Nov. 17 at Clune Arena. Freshman point guard Ryan Milne gave the Tigers a 57-55 lead with 2:28 remaining in the extra session and CC made three of six free throws during the final 1:15 to seal the victory. Rose finished with a game-high 18 points, two of which came on free throws during the final 1:15 of overtime, and is steal in the closing seconds put the game away. The Tigers snapped an eight-game losing streak against Air Force. Rose scored 33 points and became the 16th player in CC history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark, but the Tigers dropped a 90-74 decision to Lewis & Clark on Saturday. Ohlsen tallied a double-double with 23 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

DePauw opened the 2010-11 season with a pair of wins at Wabash's Little Giant Tipoff Classic. The Tigers opened with a 64-58 win over Franklin and followed it up with a 67-51 victory against Earlham. In the Franklin win, Joe Bergfeld posted career highs of 22 points and eight rebounds and Ryan Sever added a career-best 17 points. Sean Haseley added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Ryan Russell also hauled down eight rebounds. The Grizzlies were within three at 61-58 with just over one minute remaining, but Sean Haseley hit a three with 30 seconds left to seal the victory. In the win over Earlham, the Tigers took a 37-19 lead at the half before the Quakers closed the gap to seven at 40-33 with 14:53 remaining. DePauw scored the next 12 points and the lead stayed at least 16 the rest of the way.

Hendrix split its two games at the Greenville Tip-Off Classic on Friday and Saturday after falling to Ozarks in the season-opener on Monday, Nov. 15. It was too little, too late for Hendrix as the Warriors outscored Ozarks 19-8 in the last four minutes and pulled to within two points on a 9-2 run with just 23 ticks left on the clock. However, the Eagles knocked down four free throws in the final nine seconds to earn its third-straight season-opening victory over Hendrix, 70-66. The Warriors then traveled to Greenville, Ill. for a 91-83 win over the host school on Friday night. Junior guard Chris Goodman led the Warriors with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting from behind the arc, while junior guard Ammon Martin added 16 points to the mix. Westminster College led the entire 40 minutes to earn a 63-53 win over Hendrix on Saturday afternoon.

Millsaps opened up its 2010-11 season by winning both of its games last week The Majors got the season started off in the right direction with a 72-64 overtime victory at the Hangar Dome over Dillard University. LV Sumler (14), Nick Cortese (11) and Brian Merkel (11) paced the Millsaps offensive attack by scoring in double figures. Sumler also added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. The Majors held a 45-37 rebounding advantage. Millsaps then earned a 65-53 win over visiting Pensacola Christian. Leading the Majors was once again led by Sumler as he posted his second consecutive double-double (13 points, 13 rebounds). Millsaps returns to action on Nov. 23 when they host the University of Dallas before traveling to Huntingdon on Nov. 28.

Oglethorpe started its season by splitting two games, topping LaGrange in their season opener on Monday and falling to Emory in overtime on Wednesday night. Oglethorpe opened up a 26 point second half lead before letting LaGrange claw their way back to within 12 at the three minute mark. The Petrels put the game away at the stripe by nailing 17 of 20 to keep the Panthers behind by double-digits throughout the contest. With his 12 points Ward became only the 13th player in SCAC history to amass over 1,000 points and 600 rebounds for a career. For the night, Ward led all Petrels with 11 rebounds. The offensive star of the night was sophomore guard Alec Pitts who connected on 6 of 10 shots, including 4 of 6 from downtown, on his way to a game-high 18. For the third straight meeting and fourth time in the last five contests, the Oglethorpe-Emory game went to overtime with Emory prevailing in Decatur, 92-84.
  
Rhodes started its 2010-11 season with an 81-79 home loss to Howard Payne before splitting two games at the Greenville (Ill.) Classic. The Lynx notched their first win, 71-67 over Westminster (Mo.) before falling in the championship game to tournament host Greenville (75-64). Andrew Galow paced the way for the Lynx as he averaged 16 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and connected on 4 of 10 shots from beyond the arc. The Lynx return to action on Nov. 27 when they host the Rhodes Thanksgiving Classic. The Lynx will square off against Piedmont (Nov. 27) and Rust (Nov. 28).
 
Sewanee started the 2010-11 campaign with a win over Covenant College on Tuesday night before going 1-1 in the Webster Classic over the weekend. The Tigers topped visiting Covenant College, 60-51 on Tuesday. Lewis Affronti led all scorers with 15 points. On Friday night, the Tigers faced Webster University in the first day of action at the Webster Classic. After a back and forth battle featuring 17 lead changes and nine ties, the Gorloks of Webster were victorious, topping the Tigers 67-60. Freshman Valentino Bryant led Sewanee with 15 points and also pulled down five rebounds in the effort. Brett Bouldin and Trent Williams each added ten for the Tigers. On Saturday, Sewanee rebounded with a 55-48 win over Principia College.
 
Southwestern had a tough start to the season and currently sit at 1-2 after three road games. They opened the season on Monday at the University of Dallas and led by as many as 19 points. The Crusaders slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually took control in the last minute, defeating Southwestern 74-72. SU then headed to Concordia on Friday night to face Concordia and fell 99-71 after falling behind early. The Pirates got their first win of the season on Sunday night as they outlasted the Mountaineers in a double overtime thriller. Nick Caputo's jumper with seconds left on the clock pushed the game into the second overtime. In the final seconds of the contest Caputo made a free throw and then drained a three on the next possession to bring the Pirates within two. Schreiner missed both free throws on the foul which opened the door up for the Pirates as Michael Cantu scored the game winner.
  
Trinity
opened up the 2010-11 season with a pair of losses over the past week, falling to Schreiner at home on Monday night, and then losing to Linfield on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers lost the Schreiner game 78-66 to start the season, marking just the second time under Coach Pat Cunningham that the team has lost the home opener. Since Cunningham took over the program in 1999-00, Trinity is now 10-2 in home openers and 9-3 in season openers. It also marks just the second time in the past 12 seasons that Trinity has started the season 0-2, with the only other time being last season. Trinity will finish off its road trip with a game tonight at Whitworth University, followed by a pair of games this weekend. The Tigers go back to the West Coast to take part in the David Wells Basketball Classic, facing off against Claremont and Pomona-Pitzer.
