Football Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Millsaps and Rhodes combined to score 101 points, setting a new CAC/SCAC record for most combined points in a single game. The Majors racked up 596 yards of total offense in the 70-31 win at Rhodes. The Majors also set a conference record with their 70 points, breaking the mark of 68 they set in 2007.

The previous record for most combined points in a CAC/SCAC game was 99 points in Centre's 56-43 win over visiting Rhodes on Sept. 15, 2001. Millsaps held the previous record for most points by a single team in league history in the Majors' 68-6 win over Colorado College on Nov. 3, 2007.

Continuing the record breaking weekend was DePauw senior wide receiver Alex Koors. Koors became the league's all-time leading receiver after catching eight passes for 96 yards. Koors now has 3,216 career receiving yards, breaking the previous mark of 3,202 set by Trinity's Jason Hunt (1999-2002).

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College fell 44-21 on Saturday to Birmingham-Southern, dropping the ‘Roos to 3-3 overall on the year. Birmingham-Southern scored 23 unanswered points midway through the first half to head into the locker room leading 30-14 and the Kangaroos were unable to recover despite three touchdowns from Braydon MaQuar. MaQuar scored on an 83 yard run early in the first quarter to make it a 7-7 game before the Panthers jumped out to a 30-7 lead. MaQuar scored from three yards out just before halftime to make it a 30-14 game, but Birmingham-Southern scored twice more to push it to a 44-14 game late before Blake Towery found MaQuar for an 11 yard touchdown reception with 2:56 left in the game to make it a 44-21 final. MaQuar finished the game with 82 yards on six carries and 30 yards on five receptions to lead Austin College, while Josh Willis made 16 tackles, including nine solo stops and 2.0 tackles for loss to lead the Kangaroo defense. Austin College returns to Sherman for its final home contest of the 2010 season next week when they take on Rhodes on Homecoming weekend with kickoff set for 1 p.m. at Jerry Apple Stadium.

Birmingham-Southern got back to winning this week with a big home win against Austin College. The Panthers racked up nearly 400 yards on the ground en route to the 44-21 win against the ‘Roos. Senior tailback Walter Arrington, the league’s leading rusher, recorded 184 yards and scored two touchdowns. Sophomore tailback Shawn Morris, who leads the SCAC in touchdowns, added 122 yards on the ground and scored three times. He now has 11 touchdowns on the season. The BSC defense picked off three passes, including one each by sophomore Cole Rudder, freshman Jon Dean, and junior defensive back Micah Baker. Sophomore defensive back Andrew Shannon had eight tackles on the day, while senior defensive lineman Justin Ray added six tackles and a sack for a nine yard loss. BSC is at home again this weekend for its Homecoming game, taking on Sewanee at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Trailing 21-14 after one half of play, Centre out-scored Birmingham Southern 21-7 in the second half to rally for a 35-28 win Saturday, Oct. 9 at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky. The win, the first at home for the Colonels, puts Centre at 4-2 overall this year. The win marks the sixth straight victory over the Panthers and the third straight of the season for Centre. Junior running back Jonathan Pinque rushed for two more touchdowns against Birmingham Southern giving him eight for the year. With two more, he will have rushed for 10 or more touchdowns in each of his first three seasons at Centre.

DePauw's defense stopped Adrian twice from the 1-yard line in the game's final minute and the Tigers remained undefeated at 6-0 with a 23-19 win over the visiting Bulldogs. The Tigers' start is their best since 1951.DePauw took a 23-10 lead early in the fourth on Michael Engle's 2-yard scoring pass to Alex Koors with 14:15 left, but the point-after was blocked. The Bulldogs drove to the DePauw 29 before the Tigers stopped them on downs. The Tigers, however, were forced to punt on their next possession and Adrian needed just three plays to score and closed the gap to 23-17 with 9:07 left. The Bulldogs then drove to the DePauw 17, but a first down pass ended in a fumble which the Tigers' Ryan Huffman recovered with just 2:59 left. DePauw was unable to pick up a first down on its next series and punter Adam Hill ran out of the end zone as the Tigers took a safety making it 23-19. Following an Adrian timeout with 37 seconds left, the Tigers stopped the Bulldogs shy of the goal line two more times and took over on downs. Engle completed 28 of 39 passes for 260 yards and two scores with eight passes going to Koors for 96 yards. In the fourth quarter, Koors topped the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference career receiving yards record held by Trinity's Jason Hunt. He also extended his streak with at least one catch to 35 straight games. Koors also moved his career receptions total to 216 which is just one shy of tying the DePauw and SCAC record. Derrick Karazsia caught seven for 52 yards and rushed for 53 yards on 15 carries. Defensively, Ryan Preuss paced the Tigers with 14 total tackles, while Matt Johnson added 12 and Jonathan Lambert 11. DePauw can clinch a share of its fourth SCAC title with a win Saturday at Trinity. A victory would also secure the SCAC's automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III postseason.

Millsaps
had a record-breaking weekend against Rhodes, defeating the Lynx 70-31. The combined 101 points bests the mark set by Rhodes and Centre on September 15, 2001 (99 total points) and Millsaps' 70 points is the most points scored by a single team in a conference game. The Majors broke their own record of 68 points scored at Colorado College on November 3, 2007. The Majors' ten touchdowns on the day tied the previous school record set in the Colorado College game in 2007. Taylor Russolino surpassed his personal best 8 PATs and set a new school record with 10 successful points after. The Majors amassed 596 yards of total offense (good for third all-time) compared to just 395 for the home standing Lynx. The Majors will travel up to Danville, Kentucky next weekend as they take on the Centre College Colonels in a 2 p.m. Eastern start time.

In a game that produced 991 yards of total offense, Rhodes lost a 70-31 decision to Millsaps in a SCAC football game played at Fargason Field on Saturday, October 16th. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Perkins rushed for a team high 97 yards and threw two touchdown passes to lead the Lynx offense. Perkins accounted for 273 yards of total offense. Sophomore wide receiver Jack Lartigue caught 6 passes for 142 yards. Rhodes falls to 2-4 on the season and will travel to Austin College next week to face the Kangaroos.

Sewanee fell to visiting Trinity 17-3 on Saturday, despite trailing by just seven points with less than five minutes left in the contest. The Texas Tigers started things off on the first series of the game with a 35-yard kickoff return by wide receiver Caleb Urban. Urban’s return set the visitors up at their own 47-yard line, and the Tigers were able to travel to the Sewanee 26-yard line in ten plays before being held to a field goal attempt. Garrett Biel notched a 36-yarder to make it 3-0 Trinity just over four minutes into the contest. Sophomore kicker Trey Knighton converted, and with 2:54 left in the first half, the two Tiger teams were knotted at three apiece. The purple Tigers found a bright spot on the following Trinity possession. Punter Geoffrey Marolda's punt set the Trinity Tigers up at their own 26-yard line. The visitors needed only five plays before McKissic connected with Urban for a 40-yard passing touchdown to put Trinity ahead 10-3. The two teams battled through the rest of the first half and much of the second. Near the end of the fourth quarter, Sewanee took possession at their own six-yard line after a Trinity punt. Tiger quarterback Lee Schurlknight threw two incomplete passes before being sacked at the Sewanee two-yard line. Schurlknight fumbled and Trinity’s Garrett VanDyke fell on the ball in the end zone for the Trinity touchdown. VanDyke’s touchdown made it 17-3 in favor of the guests. The Sewanee Tigers fall to 1-6 on the season and 0-4 in SCAC play. Sewanee heads to Birmingham next weekend to take on Birmingham-Southern.
 
Trinity finished up a three-game stretch on the road with a 17-3 win at Sewanee on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers never trailed in the game, and took the lead for good with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Nykolas McKissic to Caleb Urban in the second quarter. Trinity’s defense sealed the win with a fumble return for a touchdown, marking the second straight game that the defense found the end zone. Trinity gave up just 138 yards of total offense in the game, holding Sewanee under 10 points for the seventh time in the past eight meetings. This week, Trinity faces off against defending SCAC Champion DePauw.  DePauw currently leads the SCAC and can clinch at least a share of the 2010 title with a win. Trinity leads the all-time series with a 10-1 record, though DePauw’s lone win came last season. Only four of the previous 11 meetings has been decided by more than 14 points, and five have been won by less than 10 points.
