Women's Lacrosse Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Sewanee defeated Colorado College Sunday afternoon 14-11 to earn the first ever SCAC Women's Lacrosse title in league history. Molly Arnold led the way for the Purple Tigers with six goals and one assist.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Birmingham-Southern went 1-1 this week in the inaugural SCAC Women's Lacrosse Championship, hosted by BSC, defeating Millsaps, 20-1, in the opening round game on friday, but falling to top-seeded Sewanee on Saturday, 20-11. BSC ends the year at 8-8. Junior Chelsea Van Voorhis led the squad offensively with 59 goals and 12 assists for 71 points. Senior Ashley  Johnson and junior Lyndsay Griffin also had 44 goals each, and Johnson led with 19 assists. Sophomore Stephanie Gore led with 76 ground balls and 39 caused turnovers, and junior Katie Bates - who played the entire season in goal - recorded 140 saves with a 12.04 GAA.

Centre
participated in the inaugural SCAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship that was held in Birmingham, Ala. from Friday, April 22 thru Sunday, April 24. Centre, the #3 seed in the event, faced the #2 seed Colorado College on Saturday, April 23 and the Colonels fell by a score of 18-4. The Colonels ended their inaugural season with an overall record of 11-6 and they went 2-2 in conference play.

Colorado College
nearly overcame an early five-goal deficit, but the Tigers were unable to get the tying score late in the second half and dropped a 14-11 decision to Sewanee in the SCAC championship game on Sunday. CC clawed to within 9-8 when Grace Maloney scored with 11:14 remaining in the game and 10-9 on a tally by Leslie Jacoby 2:06 later, only to see Sewanee answer with a 4-1 run to re-claim the momentum and a four-goal advantage with just 3:24 to play. Kelsey Morell gave the Tigers their only lead when she found the net just 40 seconds into the game. After the teams traded goals late in the first half to make the score 7-3 after 30 minutes, Colorado College outscored Sewanee 5-2 to make it a one-goal contest, but the Tennessee Tigers outscored CC 5-2 during the final 10 minutes to claim the conference crown. Maloney paced the black and gold with three goals, while Lara Atkins scored twice and added an assist. Sophomore midfielder Kate Krieger struck for three goals and added an assist as Colorado College advanced to the title game with an 18-4 victory over Centre College. CC, which extended its winning streak to eight games, grabbed a two-goal lead less than a minute into the game when Ginna Oates converted on a free-position shot with only 33 seconds expired and Ellie Cole found the net 11 seconds later. After the Colonels pulled to within 4-2,  Jacoby and Krieger scored three goals apiece as the Tigers ran off eight unanswered markers to build a 12-2 lead after 30 minutes. Abby Fink stopped seven of nine shots faced during the first half to earn the victory. Elise Burchard also finished with four points on a goal and three assists. CC got goals from nine different players while 11 had at least one point. The Tigers already have tied the 2005 national semifinalist team for second place on the program’s single-season list with 12 victories. CC travels to Regis University next Friday, before closing out the regular season the following day at home against Mesa State College.

Millsaps
closed their inaugural season this week with a loss to Birmingham-Southern in the opening round of the 2011 SCAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The Panthers took down the Majors 21-1 on their home field. The season was a tough one for the Majors, finishing 1-14 on the season, but they did record the first collegiate lacrosse win for any school in the State of Mississippi with their overtime win against Agnes Scott.

Sewanee
picked up a trio of wins this week, culminating in the program’s first SCAC Championship. On Tuesday, the Tigers traveled to Birmingham-Southern for a make-up date and rolled over the Panthers, 23-11, on their way to undefeated regular season in conference play. Molly Arnold paced the Tigers with six goals and one assist, while goalkeeper Amy Nusbaum collected 11 saves in the win. Heading into the tournament, Sewanee, who earned the #1 seed in the inaugural SCAC women’s lacrosse tournament, had a bye on Friday before facing Birmingham-Southern for the second time in five days on Saturday. In their rematch with the Panthers, 10 different Tigers found the back of the net on the way to a 20-11 victory. Arnold notched five goals as Sewanee earned 23 of 32 draw controls in the contest. In the championship game against Colorado College on Sunday, the Colorado Tigers struck first, but Sewanee scored six unanswered goals before taking a 7-4 lead into halftime. Colorado struck first again in the second half and the two teams traded goals until CC inched within one, 10-9, with just nine minutes left to play. Sewanee scored four of the last six goals, including a pair of back-to-back goals to make it 14-10, before Colorado added a late goal to make the final score 14-11. Arnold once again led the Tigers, tallying six goals and one assist, bringing her week totals to 16 goals and two assists, while Nusbaum notched her third double-digit save game of the week with 10 saves and one groundball. The Tigers are 13-5 overall after claiming the SCAC crown.
