Hernandez made a statement in the Southwestern Showdown 8k, winning the individual title in just his second collegiate race with a time of 26:40.9. He ran the majority of the second half solo in hot and humid conditions, and his time marks the fourth-fastest 8k in school history and the fastest time in program history for a freshman.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
First-year Alex Bozhilov of Dallas placed first, posting a 5k time of 16:30.6 at the UD XC Invitational against athletic scholarship schools. Running on one of the most complex and hilliest 5k collegiate cross country courses in the state of Texas, Bozhilov crossed the finish line almost 30 seconds ahead of an athlete from NJCAA Division 1 Hill College. Senior Will Salony of Trinity finished second overall against a field composed primarily of D-I runners at the UIW Invitational. He ran the 4-mile course in a time of 19:45 (4:56/pace) on a hot/humid morning, and his performance led the way for Trinity finishing third overall in a highly competitive nine-team field. Sophomore Emilio Salas of Southwestern ran a very smart race in hot conditions to finish second and lead the Pirates to the SU Showdown team title for the second consecutive year. His time of 27:10 is 36 seconds faster than his result from the same course one year ago. Sophomore Rogelio Ramirez of McMurry placed sixth at the 8k Southwestern Showdown, completing the course in a time of 28:21.54. Ramirez led the War Hawks to a second-place team finish. Senior Thomas Hughes of Concordia (Texas) posted a time of 28:57.01 to lead the Tornados with a 13th-place individual finish at the 8k Southwestern Showdown. Sophomore Mason McFeeters of St. Thomas posted a 33rd place finish (out of 86 runners) at the 48th annual Rice Invitational on Friday. McFeeters completed the four mile course in a time of 17:04.3.
