Centenary Defeats Texas Lutheran in First SCAC Quarterfinal

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Centenary led by as many as 10 (26-16) when Ralph Johnson hit a jumper with 2:59 remaining in the half but TLU closed the first half on a 13-5 run, culminating with a three-pointer by Sebastian Andrade, to narrow the margin to 31-29 at the break. 
  • TLU took a five-point lead at 40-35 at the 14:24 mark but Centenary responded with a 18-3 run over the next 10 minutes and led 53-43 with 4:21 remaining in the game. Six different Gents scored over that stretch with Mingo chipping in five of his team-high 15. 
  • After shooting 33.3 percent in the first half, the Gents hit on 50.0 percent (12-24) from the field in the second half and held TLU to 30.3 percent and 29.7 percent for the game.
  • Neither team fared well beyond the arc - Centenary made four from long range and Texas Lutheran made two, but the Gents attempted 19 (21.1 percent) while TLU needed just five attempts to hit its pair (40.0 percent).
  • Centenary's bench outscored TLU's 19-7.

  • This game was rematch of last year's quarterfinal, which Centenary won 62-59, and the seventh time in the last eight years the two have met in the SCAC tournament. No two teams have met more times in the modern era of the SCAC Tournament (2003 to date) than these two. Centenary has now won the last four in the series after Texas Lutheran won the first three.
  • Centenary is now 4-3 all-time in SCAC quarterfinal games. TLU falls to 3-2 all-time in quarterfinal round action.
  • Texas Lutheran ends its season at 10-15.
