SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran University Director of Athletics Bill Miller announced on Friday that David Mueller (pronounced Mil-ler), who spent the last three seasons as Texas Lutheran tennis's assistant coach under John Strahl along with his duties as head coach at New Braunfels High School, a position he held for 40 years, has been named the new Texas Lutheran head tennis coach for both TLU men's and women's tennis programs.

"David Mueller is one of the top Tennis Coaches in Texas. I am tremendously excited that he has agreed to lead the TLU Men's and Women's Tennis Program. I have known Coach Mueller for many years. He is a tennis coaching legend in Comal County and he is also a high character coach who coaches for the right reasons. He coaches with passion and integrity. He will be a tremendous role model for the men and women in the TLU Tennis Program. He is also an intense competitor. He will build a winning tennis program at TLU.

This will be a new chapter in TLU Tennis. I am really excited about what the future holds for our tennis program," stated Miller.

Mueller is hired following the resignation of head coach John Strahl. Strahl served as Texas Lutheran tennis coach for three years and we thank him for his service to the program.

During Mueller's tenure as head coach at New Braunfels High School, the Unicorns won 25 individual state championships and eight team tennis state championships across the 5A and 6A levels.

Starting in the fall of 2007, New Braunfels won seven straight state team tennis championships and added another title in the fall of 2015.

The Unicorns finished as the state team tennis runner-up in 1989, 2005, 2006, and 2014.

Over the course of his career, Mueller has served as the President of the Texas Tennis Coaches Association (TTCA) and has served on the TTCA board. He has been named the TTCA Coach of the Year twice and has also earned Coach of the Year honors from the San Antonio Express-News.

"Leaving New Braunfels was very difficult for me. I love all the players there and have nothing but great memories," Mueller said. "I am excited for the challenge and opportunity to coach at TLU and will work hard to see that we are successful."

Mueller graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1980. Mueller served as a graduate assistant at Sam Houston State University while receiving his Master's of Arts in Physical Education.

Mueller is the father of three adult children – Lindsay, Shelby, and Brandon.
