LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Following the final full regular season weekend of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer season, five of the six teams have punched their ticket in preparation for the 2019 SCAC Women’s Soccer Championship set to begin Friday, November 8th.
The sixth and final berth in the tournament won't be determined until Tuesday evening as the University of St. Thomas travels to Austin College for a 6 p.m. CT makeup match from a postponement earlier in the season. An Austin College victory or tie would send the 'Roos to the tournament for the first time since 2017 - a victory by St. Thomas would send Schreiner University to the tournament.
Austin College forced this game after defeating Schreiner, 1-0, last Friday in Kerrville. Sarah Carmichael scored her sixth goal of the season and third in the last five games in the 27th minute and goalkeeper Meredith Harris made two saves to preserve the clean sheet and secure three critical points for the ‘Roos.
Regular season champion and 25th-ranked Trinity University earned the top seed to next weekend's event with a perfect 8-0 conference mark. It is the ninth consecutive year the Tiger women have earned the top seed headed into the league's postseason event. The Tigers closed out the regular season with impressive victories over Dallas, 4-0, and Austin College, 7-0. Sophomore Camryn Beall paced Trinity offensively with three goals and one assist for a total of seven points on the week. Trinity is currently riding an 18-game SCAC Tournament winning streak, with the last Tigers’ loss coming all the way back in the 1991 SCAC Tournament Final.
Southwestern University and Centenary College finished in a tie for second this year - both posting 6-2 league marks. The Pirates, however, earned a 2-1 double overtime win over the Ladies on Sunday that gave them the nod for the No. 2 seed. Centenary had to settle for the third seed, which is the program's highest seed since joining the conference prior to the 2012 season. Southwestern freshman Karlee Holmes struck for the game-winner, her second of the season, in the 115th minute to secure a bye for the host Pirates in the SCAC Tournament.
Rounding out the remaining teams who have qualified, University of Dallas (5-2-1 in the SCAC) will be the fourth seed and Texas Lutheran (2-5-1 in the SCAC) will be the fifth seed. The Crusaders defeated the Bulldogs, 2-0, back on October 6th in Seguin in the lone meeting between the two squads this year. This will mark the second consecutive year and third time in tournament history that Dallas and TLU have matched up in the SCAC Tournament with the Crusaders advancing into the semifinals last year, 4-2, on penalty kicks.
The 2019 SCAC Women's Soccer Tournament gets underway Friday, November 8th at Southwestern University with the first quarterfinal match set to kick at 11:00 AM CST and the second scheduled for 1:30 PM CST. The tournament winner receives the SCAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. For additional information related to this year's championship, click here.
