LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s golf spring season is officially underway as Centenary, Schreiner, St. Thomas and Texas Lutheran all hit the links over the last week.
St. Thomas opened its spring season at the Houston Classic where the Celts finished 10th against opponents from the NCAA's Division II and the NAIA. Collectively, Celt golfers shot 943 over the two-day event.
UST's Jackson Murff carded the lowest three-round score among St. Thomas golfers. The sophomore from Missouri City, Texas shot a 15-over-par 231 over the two-day event, finishing tied for 27th on the individual leaderboard.
Centenary, Schreiner and Texas Lutheran all played at the Battle of Camp Bowie Intercollegiate.
During the stroke play portion of the event, TLU finished third in the eight-team event while Centenary and Schreiner tied for seventh. The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Chase Maus who shot 6-under in the two stroke-play rounds. He carded a 68 and a 70 to finish fourth individually. TLU won its match play competition the following day (3 1/2 to 2 1/2) against LeTourneau to take third place overall.
Centenary defeated Schreiner, 5-1, on Sunday in the final round of the Battle of Camp Bowie to finish in fifth place in the match play portion of the competition. Senior Reed Balcerowicz shot rounds of 74 and 70 for a two-round total of 144 and finished even part (tied for eighth individually) during stroke play. First-year Jake Sitterle paced Schreiner during stroke play and tied for sixth in the 54-player field with rounds of 71 nad 72.
