LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Nine out of ten Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer teams hit the field last week as designated non-conference contests highlighted the action, including Southwestern, Texas Lutheran, St. Thomas and Trinity all posting clean records.
Southwestern (5-1-1) has won five consecutive contests, its longest such streak since the 2013 season, after defeating Johnson & Wales (1-6-1), 2-0, on Friday and knocking off Colorado College (4-4), 3-1, on Sunday. Junior goalkeeper Jackson Krueger collected six saves and posted his first career shutout in the win over the Wildcats, while sophomore forward Seth Holzmann scored twice and added an assist in the win over the Tigers.
Texas Lutheran (5-2) also collected home wins over Colorado College and JWU last weekend as the Bulldogs now have five wins through their opening seven fixtures for the first time since the 2015 season. Sophomore Luis Green posted his second hat-trick of the season and third of his career in the 3-2 win over the Tigers on Friday night. Green brought his weekend total to four goals after netting an insurance marker in the 33rd minute of the Bulldogs’ 2-0 win over the Wildcats on Sunday.
St. Thomas (3-3) navigated weather issues that forced its contest with Centenary (1-2) to be postponed on Friday but was able to secure a 1-0 win over Concordia (Tex.) on the road Sunday. Sophomore Sebastian Leal registered the game-winner in just the ninth minute of the match, while Omar Lopez stood tall in goal, collecting three saves for the shutout.
Trinity (2-2-2) returned to the pitch after eight days off to earn an impressive, 6-0, win over Dallas on the road Sunday afternoon. The Tigers, who had scored just six goals coming into the contest, saw six different players find the back of the net including freshman JonConnor Rule cashing in for the game-winner in the 23rd minute for his first career goal. The win leaves Tiger head coach Paul McGinlay just one victory shy of 500 for his career.
Despite falling to Trinity on Sunday, Dallas (2-3) finished the week with a 1-1 record after the Crusaders earned a notable 4-1 victory over Schreiner on Friday. Senior Hunter Haugland recorded a hat-trick in the win, the first UD player to register one since Colton Allen in 2015.
Schreiner (2-5-1) bounced back from its loss on Friday by defeating Austin College (3-3-1) on the road, 4-2, on Sunday, snapping the ‘Roos four game unbeaten streak. Freshman Rutilio Hernandez scored the first two goals of his career in the win for the Mountaineers.
SCAC Men’s Soccer continues this week with the final designated non-conference fixtures among conference foes scheduled for Friday and Sunday before conference play officially begins on Friday, October 4th.
