Texas Lutheran Captures First-Ever SCAC Men's Soccer Championship

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Texas Lutheran scored three second half goals on its way to capturing its first-ever SCAC Men’s Soccer Tournament Title with a 3-1 victory over Colorado College Sunday afternoon. Official Championships Website | Postgame Interview | Tournament Stats | Championship Photo Album 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Each team exchanged chances in a scoreless first half with the Bulldogs hitting the post off a Luis Green shot in the 8th minute and the Tigers having a goal called back off a corner kick to do a foul in the box in the 42nd minute.
  • Texas Lutheran senior Cameron Townes opened the scoring for the Bulldogs in the 50th minute with his 10th goal of the season on an assist from senior Lalo Lopez-Rivera.
  • Just over ten minutes later, sophomore Nicolas Medina scored his second goal of the tournament on an unassisted marker to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute.
  • With Colorado College pressing looking for late game heroics, Green broke through to score his 20th goal of the season and second of the tournament in the 77th minute to extend the Bulldog lead to 3-0.
  • Colorado College pushed back, getting on the board in the 82nd minute via a Griffin Meyer penalty kick but the Tigers could get no closer as the Bulldogs saw the game out to win 3-1.
  • Colorado College finished with a 15-10 edge in shots, but the Bulldogs finished with six shots on target to just five for the Tigers. Texas Lutheran earned five corners to Colorado College’s four.

  • Luis Green: 1 goal, 4 shots, 2 shots on goal

  • Griffin Meyer: 1 goal, 6 shots, 3 shots on goal
  • John Schuler: 1 shot, 1 shot on goal
  • Hayden Cogswell: 1 shot, 1 shot on goal

NOTABLES

  • This marks the seventh straight year that the SCAC Champion has had to defeat the host school en route to the conference title with TLU knocking off Trinity in the semifinal round.
  • The win today secures Texas Lutheran’s first SCAC Men’s Soccer Championship and just its second ever men’s soccer conference championship with the only other previous title coming back in 2002 when the Bulldogs captures the American Southwest Conference Title.
  • Texas Lutheran’s Luis Green and Lalo Lopez-Rivera earned Offensive and Defensive MVP honors as Green finished the weekend with two goals and Lopez-Rivera anchored a defense that allowed just one goal, tied for the fewest goals allowed in a SCAC Tournament since Trinity posted a pair of shutouts in the 2015 tournament. Lopez-Rivera also chipped in offensively with an assist in the championship match.
  • Green’s 20 goals on the season are now tied for the ninth most in a single season in SCAC history.
  • Texas Lutheran improves to 6-5-2 all-time in SCAC Tournament play.
  • Colorado College now drops to 0-4 all-time in SCAC Championship games, 5-9 overall in the tournament. The Tigers are now 14-6 on the season and will await the NCAA decision to see if they earn an at-large bid into the National Tournament . 

UP NEXT

By virtue of today's victory, Texas Lutheran will earn the SCAC automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The 2019 Division III men's soccer bracket will be announced on at 1:30 p.m. ET on Monday, Nov. 11. The bracket will be revealed in a live selection show available to watch right here on NCAA.com.
