LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- It was another full week of SCAC basketball highlighted by the University of St. Thomas clinching the men’s regular season title Saturday by defeating Southwestern, 72-55, giving the institution its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title.
St. Thomas (14-1; 21-1) claimed the regular season crown with a pair of wins over Texas Lutheran (80-58) and Southwestern (72-55). The Celts avenged their only loss of the season Friday over TLU, jumping out with a 19-4 lead midway through the first half, while holding the Bulldogs to 21 percent shooting from the field. Kennard Robinson led UST with a game-high 22 points and six assists. Cameron Gims scored 15 points, with Freddie Ricks III adding 11. In Saturday’s victory over the Pirates, Robinson led with 23 points and Nathan Thormaehlen recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Christian Alaekwe came off the bench to score 10 points, with Ricks adding nine.
Centenary (10-5; 13-9) posted a 2-0 week with victories over Southwestern (82-79) and Texas Lutheran (91-77). Cedric Harris led the Gents with a game-high 22 points and Ralph Johnson had 17 points in the victory over Southwestern. Neil Hawkins added a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Gents extended their five-game winning streak with Saturday’s victory, led by Johnson with a career-high 23 points. Harris added 18 points, with three other players posting double-digit scoring efforts.
Trinity (7-7; 11-10) moved up in the SCAC standings with a pair of wins over Dallas (81-68) and Schreiner (77-68). Jack Williams led with a career-high 25 points, as the Tigers held Dallas to a 34.8 shooting percentage. Ben Canady was the only other Tiger to score in double-figures adding 12 points, with David Nickell contributing nine points and a career-high 13 rebounds. AJ Clark led three starters in double-figures with 15 points in Saturday’s win. Nickell added 14 points and six rebounds, with Hanley recording 13 points and seven rebounds.
Austin College (9-5; 12-9) split games over the weekend, including a 77-69 victory over Schreiner on Friday. Devin Roland had a game-high 17 points with Michael Holland adding 14 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Two other players had double-digit scoring efforts, including Kam Hogan coming off the bench to add 14.
Schreiner (5-9; 7-14) also split games over the week, with a 76-64 win over Dallas on Saturday. The Mountaineers outscored Dallas by 16 points in the second half to secure the victory. Matthew Rindahl led with 17 points and eight rebounds while Paul Wells had 13 points and Alex Dehoyos added 10.
Colorado College (4-10; 6-14) had an 88-56 victory on Friday over JWU in its only game of the week. CooXooEii Black led the Tigers with a game-high 20 points, with Aaron Acosta adding 14 points and five rebounds. Niklas Hester added a season-high 10 points and five rebounds.
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball action continues this week with five games on Friday and four on Saturday.
